Another fantastic year of Ozarks hoops. Three state titles courtesy of the Hillcrest boys, and Webb City and Mt. Vernon girls. Tons of teams in the state rankings all year. We saw Hannah Wilkerson run down the all time high school scoring mark, then make a run to Columbia. We witnessed possibly the national high school boys basketball highlight of the year when Trey Starks launched himself into the rafters of Mizzou arena and over Oakville’s Garrett Reeg. We prayed as Stephanie Phillips stopped coaching to renew her fight against cancer. And we rejoiced as she came back to guide her team to the final four. We followed the rise of newcomers to the state rankings. Verona and Richland on the girls side. Thomas Jefferson and Gainesville on the boys. We cheered all the buzzer beaters, big wins, great plays, comebacks, defensive stands, hustle plays, razzle dazzle, and gutsy losses. And now, like always, we say goodbye to those seniors who gave everything they had for their schools, for their towns, and for us, and leave us with so many memories. Here’s the year in review.

The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association has named their all-state teams for 09-10. A total of 27 players from the Ozarks are selected on the girls side. Thayer, Nixa, Webb City, and Kickapoo each have two players honored. And get ready for a lot of repeat names next year as 10 juniors and 4 sophomores (Kelsey Williams of Eminence, Tristan Carrasquillo of Verona, Bekah Bade of Springfield Catholic, and Megan Deines of Glendale) are picked to go along with 14 seniors. And getting coach of the year honors was Mt. Vernon’s Doug Hepler in class 3, and Brad Shorter of Webb City in class 4. Congratulations to all of our Ozarks all-staters.

Caught the Crane/Cassville boys game last night deep in Barry County. I wanted to get a first hand look at Crane’s high scoring guard Levi Cook, and see how and if the Cassville Wildcats were progressing under new coach TJ Dickenson. When the dust settled, Crane had themselves a 61-44 victory, Cook had 27 points, and the Wildcats have reason to hope.
The game itself was entertaining. Cassville jumped out to a 7-2 lead only to see Crane reel off a 10-1 run and finish the first quarter up 12-8. Cassville stayed in the game though not letting Crane pull away until a 12-2 run in the third quarter game them some breathing room. Cook had 14 points in the first half, and 13 in the second, most of them answering each Cassville attempt to get back in the game. And they wouldn’t as the Pirates outscored them in each quarter to get the win. Continue reading 12/15/09 Scores

And we are fully under way in the 09-10 basketball season. And Pleasant Hope’s Matt Brown has already marked himself as a player to watch scoring 82 points in the teams first two games. Last night Brown went for 40 as the Pirates won 85-33 over College Heights in the first round of the Dennis Cornish Invitational in Lockwood.
On the girls side, Everton’s Jessica Holland opened her season with a triple double in the Lady Tigers 64-21 win over Niangua in the Everton Invitational. Holland had 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 11 steals to help Everton secure the victory. Teammate Linsey Denney also scored 23 knocking down four 3 pointers.
