Kenzie Williams to Lady Bears

Mt. Vernon’s all-state guard Kenzie Williams has verbally committed to play basketball for the Missouri State Lady Bears.  You can read full reports at the News-Leader and KSPR.  Kenzie was being recruited by a number of division 1 schools, but decided to put an end to any suspense.  Congratulations Kenzie and good luck.

2009-2010 Basketball Year In Review

Another fantastic year of Ozarks hoops. Three state titles courtesy of the Hillcrest boys, and Webb City and Mt. Vernon girls. Tons of teams in the state rankings all year. We saw Hannah Wilkerson run down the all time high school scoring mark, then make a run to Columbia. We witnessed possibly the national high school boys basketball highlight of the year when Trey Starks launched himself into the rafters of Mizzou arena and over Oakville’s Garrett Reeg. We prayed as Stephanie Phillips stopped coaching to renew her fight against cancer. And we rejoiced as she came back to guide her team to the final four. We followed the rise of newcomers to the state rankings. Verona and Richland on the girls side. Thomas Jefferson and Gainesville on the boys. We cheered all the buzzer beaters, big wins, great plays, comebacks, defensive stands, hustle plays, razzle dazzle, and gutsy losses. And now, like always, we say goodbye to those seniors who gave everything they had for their schools, for their towns, and for us, and leave us with so many memories. Here’s the year in review.

Final Day Show Me Showdown II Updates

And here we go folks, the final day of basketball for the year.  One team was expected to be here.  One operated under the radar without many folks noticing.  But both Mt. Vernon and Thayer will try to make history today.  Here’s our schedule.  We’ll start the updates as soon as we can.

  • Noon – Class 3 girls championship – Cardinal Ritter (26-4) vs Mt. Vernon (29-3)
  • 1:40 – Class 3 boys championship – Cardinal Ritter (26-4) vs Hogan Prep (23-6)
  • 3:20 – Class 2 girls championship – Thayer (28-3) vs Harrisburg (30-0)
  • 5:00 – Class 2 boys championship – Bernie (28-4) vs Sturgeon (31-0)
  • 6:40 – Class 1 girls championship – Montrose (30-0) vs Jefferson (27-3)
  • 8:20 – Class 1 boys championship – Scott County Central (28-2) vs Pilot Grove (28-3)

12:32 – We’re at halftime of the class 3 girls state championship game and Mt. Vernon is up 17-8 over Cardinal Ritter.  Just brutal defense from the Lady Mountaineers so far.  Only 7 total points scored in the second quarter as Mt. Vernon had a 14-4 lead after one.

12:56 – The Lady Mountaineers 3 point shooting helped them open up a sizable lead and they’re now up 37-17 with 5 minutes in the fourth quarter.

Day 1 Show Me Showdown II Updates

Six games to cover today as teams try to move into the ultimate high school game, the state championship.  We’ll pick up our coverage just before the 1:40 start of the Clever boys taking on undefeated Sturgeon, and the Mt. Vernon girls facing Maryville. We’ll keep going right through the 8:20 finale between Miller and 29-0 Harrisburg.  Losers play Friday for third, winners play Saturday for all the marbles.  Should be a great day.

1:32 – And it’s just about go time for the Clever boys and Mt. Vernon girls.  Lawrence County is in the house with both Mt. Vernon team and the Miller girls.  And just missed getting Verona in too.  Big year for the LC.  In the early games Bernie pulls out a 1 point win over Wellston-Eskridge 69-68, and the defending class 3 girls champs Cardinal Ritter handle Macon 50-42.

2:03 – First quarter scores courtesy of The Scoreboard Guy.  The Sturgeon Fightin’ Fishes have jumped all over Clever 19 to 6.  And the Mt. Vernon girls hold a 12-9 lead after the first quarter.  Both teams are very good defensively.

2/4/10 Scores

Great moment tonight in Morrisville as Hannah Wilkerson becomes the states all time leading scorer. Former record holder Melissa Grider was on hand in the town she spent her first three years playing for to present Wilkerson the game ball after the record breaking point early in the second quarter.  Wilkerson would finish with 32 points as Miller won 75-54.  Congratulations Hannah!

In other games Skyline downs newly state ranked Fair Grove 50-48.  It’s going to be a real dogfight for the Mid-Lakes title.  West Plains continues their strong season with a 48-42 win over Rolla.  And Nixa gets a nice 51-34 win at Branson.  While on the boys side, Dadeville remains undefeated with an impressive 73-55 win over a very good Fair Play squad.

1/4/10 Question of the Week Results

According to you, my readers, Hannah Wilkerson was the girls MVP of the holiday tournaments.  Miller’s four game run through the Walnut Grove Classic included a 45 point performance by Wilkerson in the final and netted her 36% of the vote.  Coming in second was Lauren McCurry of Pleasant Hope who lead all scorers at the [...]

OS.Net Question of the Week - 1/4/09

There are pluses & minuses to being an amateur running a sports website without an editor.  Minuses include not being able to get to everything I want, having a real job, and having my excellent readers correct me when my research, information, or spelling is shoddy.  The pluses include me being able to do pretty much whatever I please.  For example…

I started out this week’s QotW asking who you thought was the girls Holiday Tournament MVP.  I picked players from 1st or 2nd place teams that had great performances.  I included Mt. Vernon’s do everything Kenzie Williams who lead them to a Pink & White championship, Hannah Wilkerson of Walnut Grove Classic champions Miller, Lauren McCurry of Pleasant Hope who was the leading scorer at Lebanon, sparkplug Erin Gavin of the Neosho Holiday Classic champion Fair Grove Lady Eagles, Makenzie Smith who helped Kickapoo take second at the KTXR Lady Classic, and Dallis Bailey of Lebanon champions Conway.  Not a bad group eh?

2009 Holiday Tournament Week - Day 3

Shocker at Weiser.  It’s no shock that Kickapoo could beat Webb City, but to do it 49-27 by only allowing the Lady Cardinals 5 points in the second half is stunning.  Great defensive effort by Kickapoo and they ran out to a 25-6 first quarter lead.

Meanwhile at the Blue & Gold, Ozark escapes again with a 3 pointer at the buzzer again defeating Strafford 40-37.  Isaiah Monroe hits the dagger tonight as Ozark advances to the Gold championship game.
