Since I was running all over the country Saturday and could only Twitter updates, here’s the wrapup on the final day of Show-Me Showdown I for 2010.
We got a good omen right off the bat as O’Hara, who Webb City defeated in the semifinals, won the class 4 girls 3rd place game 40-37 over St. Dominic.
Next came Republic in the class 4 boys 3rd place game against Soldan out of St. Louis. The first half couldn’t have gone much better as Kevin Stander scored 9, Jonathan Combs 7, and Republic lead by as many as 13 in route to a 29-23 halftime lead. But Soldan opened the second half with an 11-3 run to grab their first lead of the day. Republic fought back and regained a lead they would hold until midway through the fourth quarter on a pair of Nick Yocum free throws. Continue reading Show-Me Showdown I Wrapup

CLASS 4
At Hammons Student Center, Springfield
- Girls – Webb City 57, St. James 36
- Last year, the key to beating Webb City was to beat their press and stop Kaitlin Jaeger. But as Webb City displayed Saturday against St. James, even if you do hold Jaeger down this year, you’re still likely to get smoked. Balanced scoring and speed by the bucketful carried the Lady Cardinals to the win at HSC. St. James hung around early but a 17-2 Webb run gave them an 18 point lead in the second quarter. St. James used solid free throw shooting to stay close, and pulled within 6 in the third before a 12-4 run by the Lady Cardinals keyed by a Kyndal Clark 3 pointer removed any more suspense. A night of upsets on the boys side tonight. State ranked Dadeville is handed their first loss of the year by a very good Weaubleau squad 52-48 making Dadeville 21-1 on the season. And you’ve heard me talk a bit about Levi Cook. Well tonight he steps it up and drops 30 for the Pirates as they beat Spokane 66-65. Jordan Lair lead the Owls with 22.
On the girls side, both class 1 ranked area teams kept rolling as Verona romped over Wheaton 63-18, and Walnut Grove took a 61-52 win over a strong Morrisville team.

A huge contest in Verona tonight as the Lady Wildcats were looking to rebound from a loss to Clever against state-ranked Purdy who knocked off Miller last week. And rebound Verona did as they win the Ozark 7 matchup 61-56 behind the 23 points of Tristan Carrasquillo. Jessica Smith added 21 for Verona, while Shelby White led Purdy with 20.
On the boys side, Parkview gives a big shot in the arm to their Ozark Conference title hopes knocking off Joplin 51-48. And Houston rides Kyle Poynter’s 36 points to a 84-83 double overtime win over Mountain Grove. Poynter hit a 3 as the 4th quarter buzzer went off to send the game to overtime tied at 66. Then hit the game winner in double overtime for the Tigers.
