Eight teams left in each division after last night’s state sectional action. And the Ozarks scored some big wins.
On the girls side, the big game was in Republic and I was there. Sparta and Miller went back and forth all night. But a bizarre turn of events early in the fourth quarter is what most people will remember. With the score tied at 43 and coming out of a timeout, one of Sparta’s players waited until Miller was about to inbound the ball at halfcourt before coming on the floor. As she ran onto the court, a bandage that was covering some blood fell off. The rules are very clear that a player that has any exposed blood must be subbed out for and the exposed area covered before they can play. No big deal right? No.

Now most of you know that Joboo loves me some small school ball. And that I keep an eye out for up & coming talent. With that in mind, I headed to Sarcoxie last night to catch the Everton Lady Tigers and Jessica Holland. She of the triple double to start the season. I arrived a little late and by the time I got settled in, Everton was already down by double digits. But they started to hit some shots, applied the press, and started to chip away at the lead. Holland at 5′ 9″ had a few inches on the Sarcoxie guards and decent speed, allowing her to go inside and outside pretty confidently. Sarcoxie lead 24-18 at the half and I had Holland for 8 points in the time I had been watching.
In the second half, foul trouble and an injury to starter Linsey Denney kept Everton from throwing the pressure back on. But sophomore Paige Limpus hit for 9 second half points to help them pull within 2 starting the fourth. In the final frame, Sarcoxie’s solid backcourt took care of the ball, took advantage of the Everton foul trouble, and started penetrating to score. Holland had 9 more in the second half, but the Lady Bears got scoring from 5 different players to finish with the 47-37 win. No seniors on Everton’s squad and there is some potential there. Keep an eye on them as the year moves along, and next year.

Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost. We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo. The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0. Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short. Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams. The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip. As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys. The Blue & Gold was great. The Tournament of Champions was incredible. And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.
A couple of explanations before we continue. This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class. I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team. In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect? Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class. Who did the best relative to their competition. And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams. So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed. With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

The battle of newly state-ranked teams went to Thayer last night as the tripped up Liberty 65-64 in overtime. Justin Shipp had a huge night for the Bobcats scoring 36 points. The win gives the Bobcats at least a share of the SCA title also.
Great game in Billings last night. Galena’s Marcus Aschwege knocked down 23, but it was Dakota Harter and Billings that came out on top 72-70 as Harter scored 24 and hit the game winner. And a thriller in Joplin as Glendale erased a double digit deficit in the fourth, missed two free throws to win with no time remaining, and then saw Casey Goss hit the last of his 5 three pointers to escape with a 60-55 overtime win over Joplin. Goss led the Falcons with 29 points. Matt McCreary had 18 for Joplin. But the prize winner for last night was in Crane. Forsyth saw Derek Ince net 28 points and Sam Adams 24 to take a 78-75 double overtime win from Crane. Levi Cook scored 26 points for Crane.

*Update* A huge thank you to fungoking for posting the Lebanon results at MoSports and sending them to me. You da man!
Here are the other tournaments that I’m aware of and I will make every effort to obtain results. No promises made of course. Also, just a gentle reminder that you don’t have to be in Springfield to see some great basketball right now.
