Looks like I overlooked a candidate for boys athlete of the year. After being named SWCL Player of the Year in basketball, Crane junior Levi Cook follows that up by being named SWCL MVP for baseball. Cook joins fellow Pirates Zach Akins, Jake Smith, Ethan Dodson, and Hesston Clevenger on the first team. Coaches Allen Stolte of Billinga and Jim Julian of Forsyth share coach of the year honors. Juniors Cook and Akins are two of only 4 underclassmen on the first team. Freshmen Austin Essick of Billings and Derek Hurst of Forsyth are the others.

A night of upsets on the boys side tonight. State ranked Dadeville is handed their first loss of the year by a very good Weaubleau squad 52-48 making Dadeville 21-1 on the season. And you’ve heard me talk a bit about Levi Cook. Well tonight he steps it up and drops 30 for the Pirates as they beat Spokane 66-65. Jordan Lair lead the Owls with 22.
On the girls side, both class 1 ranked area teams kept rolling as Verona romped over Wheaton 63-18, and Walnut Grove took a 61-52 win over a strong Morrisville team.

It’s a night for overtime on the boys side as three games see bonus basketball. Marshfield needs every one of Utah Findley’s 28 points and Jared Greenlee’s 24 to down Catholic 63-61 in OT. State ranked Spokane recovers from a furious Clever rally to win in extra period 66-60 behind Dylan Price’s 29 points. Fair Play continues their strong season with an extra period 69-61 win over Morrisville. And Pierce City and Lockwood enjoyed playing each other so much they decided to go two extra periods before the Eagles win 62-60.
One game that didn’t go into overtime may serve as the coming out party for one of the underrated boys players I mentioned earlier today. Richland’s Pat Poston scored 40 tonight as the Bears downed Macks Creek 105-78.

A huge contest in Verona tonight as the Lady Wildcats were looking to rebound from a loss to Clever against state-ranked Purdy who knocked off Miller last week. And rebound Verona did as they win the Ozark 7 matchup 61-56 behind the 23 points of Tristan Carrasquillo. Jessica Smith added 21 for Verona, while Shelby White led Purdy with 20.
On the boys side, Parkview gives a big shot in the arm to their Ozark Conference title hopes knocking off Joplin 51-48. And Houston rides Kyle Poynter’s 36 points to a 84-83 double overtime win over Mountain Grove. Poynter hit a 3 as the 4th quarter buzzer went off to send the game to overtime tied at 66. Then hit the game winner in double overtime for the Tigers.
