5/17/10 District Baseball Report

While we did have some games pushed back even more, we finally saw some games played.  And Webb City’s Tyler Burgess threw a dandy to move the Cardinals on to the next round.  Webb City went 9 innings to down Joplin 2-1 and Burgess went the distance striking out 18 in the process. Their opponent in the next round, Willard, also won 1-0 over Republic.  Two seed Neosho had to go 8 innings to knock off Hillcrest 5-4.  And the home team, Carthage, pulls the upset defeating the three seed McDonald County 7-2.

2010 Ozark 7 All-Conference Basketball

Are you serious?  That’s my first reaction looking at the Ozark 7 all-conference girls team.  Of the 15 layers selected either first team, second team, or honorable mention, only 2 are seniors.  Second teamer Shelby Bowman of Exeter and honorable mention selectee Beth Bigham of Verona.  That’s it.  Everyone else returns for what should be another incredibly competitive year in 10-11.

Your players of the year are Southwest’s Levi Roberts for the boys, and Shelby White of Prudy for the girls.  Thomas Jefferson’s Cleo Elbert and Southwest’s Jason Horn share the boys coach of the year award.  While Verona’s Ryan Yates is the girls coach of the year.

3/2/10 District Update

After an opening two days that saw few real upsets, Tuesday night made up for it in a big way.  Leading the way was the boys side of the class 3 district at Stockton where all the lower seeds won including a 80-63 win by #8 seed Warsaw over top seed El Dorado Springs.  Also winning were #7 seed Skyline, #6 Morrisville, and #5 Stockton.  In Cabool, the host team, seeded second, was eliminated by the seventh seed Licking 66-59.  And in Sarcoxie, #6 Purdy knocks off #3 Greenfield 68-49.

The upsets weren’t limited to the boys side either.  In Dora, the fourth seeded host squad shockingly eliminated #1 Eminence 56-52.  After being in and out of the state rankings most of the year, the Lady Redwings looked to not be challenged until the championship game.  But the Lady Falcons send them home early and claim a spot in Saturday’s championship against Bakersfield.

Maybe tonight will finally wake up the rest of the state to what’s going on at Thomas Jefferson in Joplin.  The Cavaliers go to Washburn and get revenge for their only loss of the season knocking of the #10 team in class 3, Southwest, by a final score of 48-41.  The Cavaliers took a 9-0 lead, and ended the first period up 16-4.  The lead would swell to 16 and then things got really bad.  Trailing 23-9, the Trojans leading scorer Levi Roberts sprained and ankle and left the game for the rest of the half.  At that point, Roberts had 8 of Southwest’s 9 points.  Big trouble right?  Not exactly.  Josh Hartin scored 5 second quarter points and Josh Cutberth hit a big 3 as part of a 10-3 run to whittle the TJ lead down to 26-19 at the half.

In the second half, 6 was the important number.  That was as close as Southwest could get cutting the lead down to 6 on 5 separate occasions.  But they couldn’t break through.  Hartin scored 11 points in the half, but the TJ big men, Jordan Stauffer and Alex Oserowsky combined for 15 second half points, the Cavaliers controlled the pace of the game, and took care of the basketball against the Trojans pressure to hold off any comeback.  Stauffer and Hartin tied for high game honors with 17 points each.  TJ goes to 18-1 with the victory and secures a share of the Ozark 7 title with Southwest.

A huge contest in Verona tonight as the Lady Wildcats were looking to rebound from a loss to Clever against state-ranked Purdy who knocked off Miller last week.  And rebound Verona did as they win the Ozark 7 matchup 61-56 behind the 23 points of Tristan Carrasquillo.  Jessica Smith added 21 for Verona, while Shelby White led Purdy with 20.

On the boys side, Parkview gives a big shot in the arm to their Ozark Conference title hopes knocking off Joplin 51-48.  And Houston rides Kyle Poynter’s 36 points to a 84-83 double overtime win over Mountain Grove.  Poynter hit a 3 as the 4th quarter buzzer went off to send the game to overtime tied at 66.  Then hit the game winner in double overtime for the Tigers.
