6:15 AM – The Fair Grove Lady Eagles simply decided they would not let their season end in a manner they were not accustomed to. The California Lady Pintos were not ready for what Fair Grove was accustomed to. The end result was a dominating 82-52 victory for Fair Grove in the class 3 third place game. Fair Grove lead by 14 after one period, 22 at the half, and it just continued to grow from there. Four Lady Eagles go for double figures with both Erin and Mollie Gavin breaking the 20 point mark. Erin had 24, Mollie 21 to go along with 14 rebounds, Kristen Link 13, and Rachel Edwards 11. No California player scored more than 9 points as they shot only 29.8% from the field for the game. A memorable finish to a memorable season for Fair Grove as they finish the year third in state with a record of 29-3. Thanks Lady Eagles.

7:15 AM – And in the early morning update, the Skyline Lady Tigers are one win away from repeating as state champions as they defeated California 63-53. Skyline held the Lady Pintos to 25% shooting in the first half in building a seven point lead, held that lead into the fourth, then pushed it out to 11 early in the period. From there, California racked up 16 fouls in the final period in trying to get back into it. But Skyline hit 19 of 30 free throws in the final period to hold them off and return to the state title game. Ashley Roberts gets 19 hitting 10 of 12 from the charity stripe, Maci Wisdom 17, and Emily Reyes 13 for the Lady Tigers. Skyline puts an area representative in each girls state title game, and will be going for their second straight state championship at 6:10 this evening against Cardinal Ritter.

Here’s a quick look at each matchup and what to expect. Except for class 3 games at Springfield, all boys games are at 1 PM, and all girls games at 2:45 PM.

Spent the evening in Purdy taking in the girls first round games. Top seed Miller looked sluggish, but still defeated Greenfield handily 70-46 with Hannah Wilkerson scoring 32 points. Coach Brandon Weiss told me that on the ride to Purdy he suspected that the girls weren’t quite focused and that certainly appeared to be true. The result should serve to get them sharp for the next contest though.
That will be against fourth seed College Heights who came alive in the fourth period to beat Jasper 33-29. Down by 3 early in the quarter, the Lady Cougars closed the game on a 9-2 run to punch their ticket to the next round.

The battle of newly state-ranked teams went to Thayer last night as the tripped up Liberty 65-64 in overtime. Justin Shipp had a huge night for the Bobcats scoring 36 points. The win gives the Bobcats at least a share of the SCA title also.
Great game in Billings last night. Galena’s Marcus Aschwege knocked down 23, but it was Dakota Harter and Billings that came out on top 72-70 as Harter scored 24 and hit the game winner. And a thriller in Joplin as Glendale erased a double digit deficit in the fourth, missed two free throws to win with no time remaining, and then saw Casey Goss hit the last of his 5 three pointers to escape with a 60-55 overtime win over Joplin. Goss led the Falcons with 29 points. Matt McCreary had 18 for Joplin. But the prize winner for last night was in Crane. Forsyth saw Derek Ince net 28 points and Sam Adams 24 to take a 78-75 double overtime win from Crane. Levi Cook scored 26 points for Crane.
