Ozarks squads bring home a third and fourth place finish home from St. Joseph and the state softball final four.  In class 2, the Pleasant Hope Lady Pirates took the third place game 4-1 over Belle to finish the season 23-5.  Sarah Siegismund scattered 8 hits over her 7 innings of work while striking out 9 [...]

What a day!

It’s a huge day in Ozarks sports.  Not only is it week 2 of the district playoffs with a number of big matchups, but we have state championships going on in softball & girls tennis.  Up in St. Joseph, the Republic Lady Tigers and Pleasant Hope Lady Pirates are getting ready for the semifinal games.  Pleasant Hope takes on Blair Oaks at 1 o’clock and Republic faces Kirksville at 1:30.  The weather in the St. Joe area today is supposed to be cloudy, a high of 43, and patchy drizzle possible so we’ll keep you updated on any weather related developments and finals.

Quarterfinal softball results

After a softball quarterfinal Saturday across the state, two Ozarks teams remain alive in their quest for a state championship.  The Pleasant Hope Lady Pirates defeated Strafford 6-4 as they push three runs home in the top of the sixth, then hold on.  For Pleasant Hope, it’s the school’s second final four appearance in any sport.  The last appearance being in boys basketball in 1929 when they took fourth.

On the other end of the spectrum, Republic is making 11th trip to a final four.  But I’m not sure they’ve ever done it in such dramatic fashion. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, with the bases loaded, Republic’s Hailey Johnson jacked an 0-2 pitch over the fence for a walk off grand slam to send the Lady Tigers to their second softball final four.  Johnson also was the winning pitcher striking out 11 along the way.

Sectional softball results

*UPDATED* 10/16

Rain postponed most of Wednesday’s sectional softball action.  They’ll try all the suspended games again today weather permitting.  Three games did get completed though.  In class 2, Pleasant Hope’s Sarah Siegismund pitched a no hitter to lead the Lady Pirates to a 5-0 win over Diamond.  Pleasant Hope will next play the winner of the Strafford/Hollister matchup.

In class 3, Republic moves on and Marshfield falls.  The Lady Tigers get a grand slam from catcher Amanda Davis to down Carl Junction 6-1, but Marshfield falls 6-5 to Southern Boone County in Fulton.  Southern Boone County will be Republic’s next opponent Saturday in Ash Grove.

Softball state championship

Crocker came oh so close to claiming their first state softball title in their first trip to the final four since 1982.  After giving up a run in the first, the Lady Lions tied it at 1 in the fourth on a Courtney Smith double to drive in Maegan Knudson.  Then in the top of the [...]
