2009 State Volleyball – Final Day

And to wrap it all up, Rogersville took 3rd place in class 3 with a 25-18,25-13 sweep of Cape Girardeau Notre Dame.  Chloe Blount leads the effort with 11 kills as the Wildcats easily avenge their split at the hands of Notre Dame from the previous day that kept them from the title game.

So four of the five Ozarks teams in Kansas City end their weekend with a win.  Three third place finishes, a second place, and one state championship.  Not bad at all.  Now only 9 months until practice starts again.

State Volleyball Day 1 – Evening Updates

9:55 PM – And by the narrowest of margins, Rogersville falls to the third place game tomorrow.  Needing not only to win both of their sets, but also have O’Hara win both of theirs, the champs held up their end of the deal.  Sweeping Villa Duchesne 25-11, 25-20.  And Rogersville fought like champions as they rallied from a 21-19 deficit to win their first set 29-27.  The second set was another nail biter as the two team were never separated by more than 4 points.  Rogersville trailed 13-9 but closed the gap & tied numerous times even grabbing a lead at 20-19.  But ND would fend them off, retake the lead, and the Wildcats couldn’t get over the hump as they were finally closed out 26-24.  Great effort from Rogersville, but they’ll have to settle for a rematch with Notre Dame tomorrow in the 3rd place game.

8:55 PM – Now to catch up on Rogersville who is playing their last match right now.  Their evening started off rougher as the defending state champs, KC O’Hara, swept them 25-16, 25-14.  Their second match fortunes were better as the fought their way to a split with Villa Duchesne.  They dropped their first set 25-16 before finally getting a win 25-19 in the second.  At 1-3, the Lady Wildcats still have a shot to make the finals.  Villa stands at 2-2 and is playing O’Hara right now.  Rogersville is taking on 0-4 Cape Girardeau Notre Dame.  If they can win both sets and O’Hara sweeps Villa, they make the final.  I’ll update you soon.

2:50 PM – Lesterville takes the second set from Osceola also 25-21 in a hard fought affair.  Still waiting on the Winona results but it’s been announced that it will be Lesterville & Winona in the final tomorrow.

2:25 PM - Osceola falls hard in the first set to Lesterville.  The Bearcats win 25-14.  The Lady Indians need a convincing win in the second set.

State volleyball schedule

Here’s the schedule for the state volleyball championships this weekend at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.  If you’ve never been there, it’s a great old building.  And with the chance to watch two matches at a time all day Friday, it would be well worth the trip for any volleyball fan.  We’ll have updates here as we get them.  Good luck to all our Ozarks representatives.

FRIDAY – Round Robin Semifinals

CLASS 1

Sectional & quarterfinal volleyball results

When the day started, the possibility existed of six teams from the Ozarks ending up in Kansas City next weekend for the state volleyball championships.  When the dust settled on the day, one Cinderella was still at the ball, one power had pulled off their biggest win of the year, and five teams were alive to see another day.

Ozark powered through rival Nixa in two sets in the quarterfinal round of class 4.  Then got the win of the day as they swept state ranked and once defeated Helias out of the state tournament in two sets 25-19, 25-19.

In class 1, Osceola advanced as expected, knocking out Liberal in the sectional round, then taking out New Haven in two sets.  And Winona continues their underdog run.  Seeded third in their district, the Lady Wildcats won the title to face Sparta in the sectional round.  They won two sets to one, then swept Miller who had earlier defeated Galena.

The opening round highlights include rivals Nixa & Ozark squaring off in Waynesville.  And a pair of great matchups in Strafford as College Heights faces El Dorado Springs, and Fair Grove takes on Clever.  Tantalizing possible second round games include Mt. View-Liberty/Scott City, Osceola/Green Ridge, Republic/Rogersville, and Ozark/Helias.  But they all have work to do yet.

‘Aw nuts.  Skunked again.’  – Ralphie, A Christmas Story

Sadly, that pretty much wraps up the days activities at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City today.  Only one of the area teams came out on the winning end today as Ash Grove took third place in class 2 in 3 sets over Cole Camp.  The Lady Pirates end the year with a 21-10-5 record.  In the other third place game involving an Ozarks team, Glendale fell to Incarnate Word in 3 sets to finish the season 35-4-1 and fourth in the state.  Kaley Lyons ended her great high school career with 19 kills in the losing effort.

State volleyball semifinal updates

9:35 PM - Finally the score of Rogersville’s last match today.  They sweep St. Dominic 25-18, 25-20 to roar into the championship match with a 5-1 pool play record.  Should be a great final with O’Hara.

9:20 PM - Glendale drops both of their games in their second match with Lee’s Summit West and will play for third place tomorrow against Incarnate Word.  Lee’s Summit West stands at 4-0 with St. Joseph’s at 3-1.  The Angels hold the tie breaker against Glendale having scored more points in their split.  8:30 PM tomorrow is the time of the third place match for the Lady Falcons.
