2009-2010 Basketball Year In Review

Another fantastic year of Ozarks hoops. Three state titles courtesy of the Hillcrest boys, and Webb City and Mt. Vernon girls. Tons of teams in the state rankings all year. We saw Hannah Wilkerson run down the all time high school scoring mark, then make a run to Columbia. We witnessed possibly the national high school boys basketball highlight of the year when Trey Starks launched himself into the rafters of Mizzou arena and over Oakville’s Garrett Reeg. We prayed as Stephanie Phillips stopped coaching to renew her fight against cancer. And we rejoiced as she came back to guide her team to the final four. We followed the rise of newcomers to the state rankings. Verona and Richland on the girls side. Thomas Jefferson and Gainesville on the boys. We cheered all the buzzer beaters, big wins, great plays, comebacks, defensive stands, hustle plays, razzle dazzle, and gutsy losses. And now, like always, we say goodbye to those seniors who gave everything they had for their schools, for their towns, and for us, and leave us with so many memories. Here’s the year in review.

2009 Springfield Quarterback Club Awards

The Springfield Quarterback Club announced their yearly awards at their last meeting of the year.  Hillcrest QB Mitch Jenkins was named the Senior Player of the Year.  Jenkins coach, John Beckham was named co-Coach of the Year along with Bobby Cornelison of Springfield Catholic.  Back of the Year went to the ever dangerous Scotty Hutchinson from [...]

Sectional Football Preview

Monday night is rematch night.  Seven of the ten games feature teams playing each other for the second time this year.  Six of those being replays of district games.  Two of the remaining three are repeats of games from last year.  Some things are quite different, some are exactly the same.  Here’s what to look for.

CLASS 1

  • Miller (9-2) at Thayer (9-1)
    • The big question here is did Lockwood find a chink in Thayer’s armor with the passing game?  Or was it just one of those nights?  In week 8 Thayer brought the heat on Miller QB Justin Jack in his first game back & battered him on their way to a 54-14 trouncing of the Cardinals.  As usual, the Bobcats found major yards on the ground rushing for almost 500 yards.  Miller has changed up their defense since then with good results, but can they shut down that Thayer rushing attack?  Before you answer, consider this.  Last year’s district game between these two at Miller, Thayer wins 43-7.  When they met in the second round at Thayer, the Bobcats won but only by a score of 28-21.

“Playoffs?” - Jim Mora

Yes, coach.  We’re talking about the playoffs.  Because they’re here.  Thirty teams from the Ozarks seek the state championship in five different classifications.  Thirty teams are done for the year.  At least nine more schools will start basketball practice after tomorrow night.  Here’s what to watch for.

CLASS 1

  • Lockwood (6-4) at Thayer (8-1)
    • This one is simple.  Can Lockwood contain the running attack of the Bobcats?  Josh Huckabee is the big dog.  But Cameron Carey & Ethan Leisenring are equally able to run for big yards.  The weather should be good giving the Tigers and Blake Abbiatti a chance to make some yards through the air.  But if the defense doesn’t play their best game, it won’t matter.

Week 9 picks

Amazing isn’t it.  Week 9 and there are still questions to be answered.  Just how good is (Osceola, Ava, Seneca)?  Can Justin Jack get back to form for the playoffs?  Is this senior class at Thayer the true heart of this team that’s been so good these past three years?  And is this their time finally?  Is Jeff Pipenbrink the best small school WR around?  Will anyone score on the Cassville defense again this year?

We may know some of these answers after this week.  As well as some playoff teams and some more conference champions.  But there will surely be more answers to seek next week.  But for now, let’s just focus on the…

Game of the Week

Week 8 review

What a week.  Class 3 #1 Monett goes down hard.  As does #6 Mountain Grove.  A team wins on a safety.  A running back averages almost 34 yards a carry.  Class 4 #1 Webb City and class 1 #5 Thayer make big statements about their intentions.  And 200 yard rushing games abound this week with at least 6 different runners hitting the mark.  Now here’s your piping hot version of…

OzarksSports.Net Week 6 Football Update

After a high scoring week 6, there’s a little bit of jostling in the rankings.  All the number ones remain the same with Monett hanging on by a thread.  Big matchups in a number of conferences this week.  None bigger than Ava & Mt. View-Liberty in the SCA.  Osceola also has a major game with the WEMO title on the line.  The COC Large picture is about to get clearer, the Big 8 is about to get serious, and the Spring River Valley chase may be coming to an end.  Here’s where we stand after week 6.

CLASS 5 & 6

  1. Rolla (6-0)
  2. Joplin (4-2)
  3. Nixa (4-2)
  4. Camdenton (4-2)
  5. Ozark (3-3)

Week 6 review

When did basketball season start?  Seriously.  54-41? 60-41? 69-63?  7-6?  Oh wait, that’s more like it.  Yes it was an offense happy week 6.  But the defense was still out there.  Nixa & Camdenton played a 7-6 headknocker.  Pierce City & Miller only put up 25 points combined, and even #1 Monett only managed 14 points in their 14-7 win over Aurora.  Ava & Mt. View-Liberty setup a big matchup next week.  Osceola got a little help from the team they need to beat Friday.  And Ozark & Kickapoo got their district campaigns off to good starts.  Read all about it.

Because I’m still not happy, until all the ugly is eliminated from…

OzarksSports.Net week 5 football update

Let’s face it, polls & rankings are useless.  They really are.  They have no bearing whatsoever on the actual outcomes, cause debate & hard feelings, and mainly serve to show that we really have no idea what’s going to happen.  Pre-season rankings are the worst.  Trying to decide who is best when you have nothing to go on?  Ridiculous.  If your going to rank teams, you should at least wait until you have something to go on.  And even then, there’s no point.

But they are a whole lot of fun and we could all use that.  So here are my initial set of rankings for the year.  Guaranteed to be questionable, debatable, and absolutely unrelated to how things will ultimately turn out.  Included are the latest conference standings.  And finally, I’ve listed the winless & undefeated teams remaining along with an assessment of their chances of staying that way this week.

CLASS 5 & 6

  1. Rolla (5-0)
  2. Camdenton (4-1)
  3. Joplin (3-2)
  4. Nixa (3-2)
  5. Lebanon (3-2)

Week 3 picks

I need a comeback week after last weeks cavalcade of ugly picks.  This week is a little light on top line games.  Rogersville/Bolivar, Miller/Greenfield, and Mountain Grove/Mt. View-Liberty the headliners.  Lots of games that have serious conference consequences though.  I’ll be headed to Howell County to catch Mountain Grove & Liberty.  Don’t overlook the Higginsville/El Dorado Springs game.  Both are 2-0 and while there are still question marks about how good each is, it should be a great game.  And just remember, right now for a low low price of just $13.99, you can own your very own…

Week 3 Picks

Game of the Week

  • Rogersville (2-0) (#8 class 3) at Bolivar (2-0) (#3 class 4)
    • Bolivar just wants to keep doing what they’re doing.  Keep Josh Moffett scoring touchdowns, Kolton Peavey passing well, and Alex Talley picking off everything in sight.  The last may be the most difficult as Rogersville isn’t planning to throw much.  Especially if they can continue to run like they did last week against Branson going for 271 yards.  Dylan Cole scored on runs of 21 and 95 yards to lead the attack.  The Wildcats also need Colton Dill to truly be a multi-threat to keep the Liberator defense from keying in on one area.  If Bolivar can grab the early lead, they should win.  But if it stays close, I’d give Rogersville the advantage.
