Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost. We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo. The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0. Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short. Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams. The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip. As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys. The Blue & Gold was great. The Tournament of Champions was incredible. And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.
A couple of explanations before we continue. This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class. I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team. In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect? Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class. Who did the best relative to their competition. And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams. So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed. With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

6:15 AM – The Fair Grove Lady Eagles simply decided they would not let their season end in a manner they were not accustomed to. The California Lady Pintos were not ready for what Fair Grove was accustomed to. The end result was a dominating 82-52 victory for Fair Grove in the class 3 third place game. Fair Grove lead by 14 after one period, 22 at the half, and it just continued to grow from there. Four Lady Eagles go for double figures with both Erin and Mollie Gavin breaking the 20 point mark. Erin had 24, Mollie 21 to go along with 14 rebounds, Kristen Link 13, and Rachel Edwards 11. No California player scored more than 9 points as they shot only 29.8% from the field for the game. A memorable finish to a memorable season for Fair Grove as they finish the year third in state with a record of 29-3. Thanks Lady Eagles.

7:15 AM – And in the early morning update, the Skyline Lady Tigers are one win away from repeating as state champions as they defeated California 63-53. Skyline held the Lady Pintos to 25% shooting in the first half in building a seven point lead, held that lead into the fourth, then pushed it out to 11 early in the period. From there, California racked up 16 fouls in the final period in trying to get back into it. But Skyline hit 19 of 30 free throws in the final period to hold them off and return to the state title game. Ashley Roberts gets 19 hitting 10 of 12 from the charity stripe, Maci Wisdom 17, and Emily Reyes 13 for the Lady Tigers. Skyline puts an area representative in each girls state title game, and will be going for their second straight state championship at 6:10 this evening against Cardinal Ritter.

It was a good night to be a Lady Eagle. The Nixa girls get their revenge in round 2 as they defeat archrival Ozark 45-38. Bri Anton led all scorers with 18 but Nixa makes a 9 point lead entering the fourth quarter stand up. Aly Stock & Abby Bracker each had 12 for the Lady Eagles. And Fair Grove again shows balanced scoring with 5 players going for 8 or more to down Hillcrest 69-56. Mollie Gavin had 19 for Fair Grove to lead all scorers.

I was sick yesterday. Really. You can check with my boss. That is my excuse for not catching the Lebanon/Kickapoo football game last night. Kickapoo wins their homecoming game 25-24 over the Yellojackets. Ryan Howerton again put up big numbers going 41 for 68 with 497 yards and 2 TDs and ran for another score, but [...]

Great softball battle last night as Carthage took the measure of Republic 1-0. Republic actually outhit Carthage 6-4 in the game. But in the bottom of the seventh, Sheyan Irwin found herself at third after a walk, a steal of second, and a sacrifice bunt. Whitney Triplett then stepped up and drove her in to end [...]

Lots of volleyball action last night. Glendale and Reeds Spring continue to roll along. Glendale downed Parkview 2-0 behind 14 kills from Kaley Lyons. While Reeds Spring dispatched a solid Webb City team 2-0 with Sam Jones leading the way with 19 assists. And Webb City’s Nicole Hudson broke the state home run record last night [...]
