“And the walls came tumbling down.” - Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho
The first state soccer championship in the state of Missouri occurred during the 1968-69 school year. At Normandy High School in St. Louis, the Christian Brothers boys team upended Rosary 1-0 in overtime to claim that historic first title. The first girls championship would be played in 1985 but by then the wall separating the Ozarks from a state soccer title was solidly in place. 23 years after that first title game, teams from SW Mo began taking down the wall piece by precious piece. Progress was slow but steady.

Some baseball is back on tonight and we’ve already had a great game. A couple of small school titans meet in Dadeville & Stockton with the Tigers coming out on top. Robbe Ewing used his arm and bat to lead the way, hitting a HR as well as getting the win while striking out 13 Bearcats. Keaton Seibenaler also hits a dinger to give Stockton a big win.
Elsewhere, Ozark wins a close one over Glendale 3-2 as Drew Crain pitches a complete game for the win. Strafford’s Conner Wilson smacks a home run and 5 Indian players get 2 hits each as Strafford pulls out an 8-7 win over Forsyth. And Tyler Burgess continues to impress for Webb City as he gets the W against Kickapoo 9-1. Derrick Mann helped the Webb City cause with an early grand slam, one of three homers on the night for the Cardinals.
And in soccer last night, Parkview wrapped up their first ever Ozark Conference championship with a 3-0 win over West Plains. The Lady Vikings will head into districts with a perfect 9-0 conference run in their pocket.

One streak is gone as Conway’s scoreless streak comes to an end, but they still get a good win beating a solid Norwood team 7-5. Trailing 5-3 after the second inning, the Bears plated 3 in the third and held the Pirates scoreless the rest of the way to get the win. Jacob Childers and Tyler Perryman both went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored for Conway. While Nathan Huckaby had 4 RBI.
Another streak is still alive as Rolla’s Adrian Pogue recorded her seventh consecutive shutout leaving her one shy of the state record. The Lady Bulldogs got goals from Olivia Cox, Katelyn Maddy, Taylor Tronstad, Maria Vincent, and Kaylyn Stoll as they downed Joplin 5-0. To tie the record, Pogue and her teammates will have to shutdown a Jefferson City team that has only been shutout twice this season. They’ll face the Lady Jays Monday at Rolla.
And it was a big day for boys golf yesterday as the COC Large and Big 8 held their conference tournaments with Ozark and Mt. Vernon coming out on top. And Lebanon fought through the windy conditions to win the Aldo Sebben Relays in Springfield.

Caught some baseball action at the Cassville Tournament yesterday that, due to poor field conditions in Cassville, was going on in Purdy. Seneca got off to a good start to the season winning two games. In the first they trailed Aurora 11-6 going into the bottom of the last inning but scored 6 in the last frame to win 12-11. No such closeness in game two. After Purdy jumped out to a 2-0 lead after their half of the first inning, Dalton Cummings launched a 2 run blast deep to left center. Sencea would score 5 in the frame, hit 4 home runs for the game, and won 13-3 in 5 innings. Purdy then rebounded with a strong game, taking Aurora to extra innings before finally falling 5-4 in the eighth.

Not much success on the boys side of the equation at the class 2 state cross county championships this weekend. No area boys teams finished in the top 5. But Austin Slagle of Ash Grove did represent the Ozarks well finishing fourth in the individual competition.
A totally different story on the girls side as Springfield Catholic finished second overall and East Newton took fourth. Five area girls finished in the top ten individuals lead by Catholic’s Courtney Devlin who took fifth. Her teammate Natalie Smid finished in ninth place. Rounding out the area contingent was Maggie Tennal of Lamar in sixth, Conway’s Brittney Leakey in seventh, and Kelsie Hutsell of Willow Springs in eighth.
