A huge contest in Verona tonight as the Lady Wildcats were looking to rebound from a loss to Clever against state-ranked Purdy who knocked off Miller last week.  And rebound Verona did as they win the Ozark 7 matchup 61-56 behind the 23 points of Tristan Carrasquillo.  Jessica Smith added 21 for Verona, while Shelby White led Purdy with 20.

On the boys side, Parkview gives a big shot in the arm to their Ozark Conference title hopes knocking off Joplin 51-48.  And Houston rides Kyle Poynter’s 36 points to a 84-83 double overtime win over Mountain Grove.  Poynter hit a 3 as the 4th quarter buzzer went off to send the game to overtime tied at 66.  Then hit the game winner in double overtime for the Tigers.

2009 Bass Pro TofC – day 1

11:35 PM - McEachern 66, Central 48.  Down only 29-21 at the half despite only shooting 29.4%, the Bulldogs would continue to misfire early in the second half and the Indians were not seriously challenged from halftime on.  Central finished with 30% shooting for the game and were outrebounded 47-33.  The Bulldogs could only manage 2 players in double figures with Thomas Chadwick scoring 13 and Nathan Wood 10.  Top recruit Trae Golden lead all scorers with 24.  Teammates Alioune Diouf hit for 11 and Colin Reddick 10 as the Indians move on to play Olympia at 9:30 tomorrow.  Central will clash with Ozark at 8.

Got to catch a great game tonight and one of the better small school players in the area with Pierce City and Dietrick Sooter taking on the Southwest Trojans in Washburn.  In a game that was close throughout, the free throw shooting of the Eagles made the difference as Pierce City wins 76-69.  For the night, Pierce City was 19 of 24 from the line including 11 of 12 in the second half.  Sooter lead 4 players in double figures with 26 including 5 3-pointers.  For Southwest, Levi Roberts had 23 and Josh Hartin 21 but it wasn’t enough to keep the Eagles from winning their fourth game in a row in Washburn.

The highlight of big school play came as Hillcrest snapped Kickapoo’s 65 game Ozark Conference win streak dropping them 62-43.  The Hornets held Alex Hall to just 5 points on the night and were lead by James Taylor’s 17 point and 14 rebounds.  Hillcrest also got 17 from Derek Chaney and 16 from Dorial Green to go to 7-2 on the year.

The Central Bulldogs serve notice that they are going to be a force in the area this year as they down Ozark in a big early season matchup 88-78 last night. The Bulldogs came out hot from the start and forced 15 Tiger turnovers on the night.  Johnny Gray scored 26 points to lead Central with Nathan Wood chipping in big time with 21.  Jordan Nuckolls had 30 for the Tigers to lead all scorers, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Central on this night.

And at Billings, Dietrick Sooter made a strong argument to be included in the discussion for the best player in the Ozarks with a 39 point, 9 3-pointer performance in the Eagles 77-74 loss to Billings.
