Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost. We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo. The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0. Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short. Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams. The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip. As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys. The Blue & Gold was great. The Tournament of Champions was incredible. And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.
A couple of explanations before we continue. This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class. I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team. In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect? Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class. Who did the best relative to their competition. And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams. So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed. With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

Officially, Morgan Johnson got 24 points, 26 rebounds, and 14 blocks for an amazing championship game triple double. Kelsey Knox leads the Lady Pirates with 26 points hitting 2 threes in addition to her 18 of 21 performance from the free throw line. For Webb City, Hailey Roderique hits 4 of 5 from downtown and scores 23 points. Kaitlin Jaeger scores 21 but is only 6 of 23 from the field as she was the main target of Johnson’s block party. In her final game, senior Nicole Hudson goes for 18 points. The Lady Cardinals won the turnover battle, tied on rebounds, and hit twice as many threes as PC. But the game was won at the line. The Lady Pirates hit more free throws than Webb City attempted as they outscored them 38 to 21 from the charity stripe.

I have to be honest, this matchup worries me. When I got my first look at the bracket, Platte County struck me as the team to beat. They are talented, tough, experienced, and they have Morgan Johnson.
The Lady Pirates focus their attack around the 6’4″ Iowa signee. Johnson has a bag of post moves and has developed a good outside shot. For her career Johnson has almost 1,900 points, over 1,100 rebounds, and just short of 400 blocked shots (the seventh best total in Missouri history). All those talents were on display Thursday night as Johnson scored 41 (going 17 of 21 from the field & 7 of 8 from the line), grabbed 11 boards, and blocked 9 shots in Platte’s 62-50 win over Miller Career Academy. And to top it off, she’s a very smart player and student.

8:25 PM – The Webb City Lady Cardinals book their first trip to the state title game with a 58-47 victory over #1 and undefeated Dexter. Kaitlin Jaeger scores 32 points, grabs 13 rebounds, and goes 14 of 17 from the line to lead the way. A huge sequence with the score 49-45. Jaeger had a [...]

In a little under four hours, Webb City will take the floor against undefeated and #1 in state Dexter. What they will find is a team very similar in some respects, and very different in others.
Similarities? They’re both fast & physical. Preferring to push the ball up court, run, and attack the basket. Only one 6 footer on the squad. Neither team shoots a ton from 3 point range. And both squads are making their first appearance in the final four.

In trying to decide our destination tonight, my stat keeper (and son) voted for Purdy to see the Lady Eagles light it up again or Bolivar for Branson/Central and Nixa/Neosho. But I hold the keys and drive so I gave into the temptation to watch the Webb City/Republic rematch and Aurora take on Webb City. So off to Joplin we went.
My strong suspicion was that the boys game would be much closer than it looked on paper, and boy was I right. Trey Laveroni scored first for the Cardinals and it quickly became apparent that they were very prepared to handle Aurora’s pressure. They found men open behind the press, room to dribble through the press, and open passes over the press as the Houn Dawgs couldn’t get the turnovers needed to get a run going. Indeed, if Webb’s passing had been more accurate, they would have had an even more productive first half. As it was, both teams played at about the same level, and the first half swayed back and forth. Six ties and eight lead changes as the teams fought to the half with Webb up 27-25 after scoring the last four points before the break.

In it’s first time hosting the COC wrestling tournament, the Neosho Wildcats decided to not play the gracious host. Instead they racked up 272 points to win their first COC tournament championship by a comfortable margin over second place Ozark. Six individual championships propelled Neosho to the top. Willard took third.
On the hardwood. Glendale won their Winter Classic for the first time as tournament MVP Tayor Triplett knocked down 27 pts. Casey Goss pitched in with 21. And in the huge matchup of state ranked team in the championship of the Iberia Tournament, class 1 number seven St. Elizabeth handed class 2 number two Laquey their first loss of the season 75-73.
