2010 Week 1 Picks

It’s finally here!  Let the trumpets be sounded forth.  Slay the fatted calf.  Prepare to make merry uponeth the greenery of many fields as dusk settleth over the earth.  Yea verily, it is good and shall be good forevermore.  Bringeth forth mistrials to delight our ears with the anthems of our lands.  Set the musicians to play, the spotted hordes to cheer, and the young men who recalleth the titans of yore to clash within the arenas of our land as they seek to claim eternal, resplendent glory for themselves and their principalities!

In other words, let’s play some football.  I’ll be doing an SCA swing this weekend starting in Mountain Grove to watch the Panthers clash with defending state class 3 champions Cassville.  Then it’s off to Howell County for Hogan Prep and Mt. View-Liberty Saturday afternoon.  More great games this opening week than I think I’ve ever seen before.  So, town cryer, announceth the picks!

2010 SCA Football Predictions

A three way tie for the conference title last year kept Mountain Grove’s string of championships alive.  Mt. View-Liberty will look to start a string of their own.  And familiar friend Thayer returns to the conference.

2009-2010 Basketball Year In Review

Another fantastic year of Ozarks hoops. Three state titles courtesy of the Hillcrest boys, and Webb City and Mt. Vernon girls. Tons of teams in the state rankings all year. We saw Hannah Wilkerson run down the all time high school scoring mark, then make a run to Columbia. We witnessed possibly the national high school boys basketball highlight of the year when Trey Starks launched himself into the rafters of Mizzou arena and over Oakville’s Garrett Reeg. We prayed as Stephanie Phillips stopped coaching to renew her fight against cancer. And we rejoiced as she came back to guide her team to the final four. We followed the rise of newcomers to the state rankings. Verona and Richland on the girls side. Thomas Jefferson and Gainesville on the boys. We cheered all the buzzer beaters, big wins, great plays, comebacks, defensive stands, hustle plays, razzle dazzle, and gutsy losses. And now, like always, we say goodbye to those seniors who gave everything they had for their schools, for their towns, and for us, and leave us with so many memories. Here’s the year in review.

SCA All-Conference Basketball

Ava almost sweeps the major post-season awards in the SCA as Kayla Dooms wins girls player of the year, Mark Wendler is named girls coach of the year, and Cole Dishman gets boys coach of the year.  Only Houston’s Kyle Poynter breaks the Ava bloc as the Tiger scoring machine is picked boys player of the year.

Class 1, 2, & 3 Quarterfinal Update

On a wild Saturday of playoff action, six OS.Net teams punched their tickets to the final four.  Including the Dadeville boys who won their anticipated matchup with Thomas Jefferson 63-55 in overtime.  Zach Medley lead the Bearcats with 23 points hitting five three pointers including a buzzer beating 70 footer going into halftime.  The Thayer girls are going to their first final four as Kaley Hebert’s 20 points lead them past Meadow Heights 51-40.

Unfortunately, the road ended for a few area teams also.  The Stockton girls saw their season end 46-30 to Maryville.  Verona stayed with undefeated Montrose the majority of the game.  But when Tristan Carrasquillo fouled out with 6 minutes to go and Verona trailing by 2, Montrose’s Morgan Eye took over.  Eye would finish with 29 points as the Lady Wildcats fall 61-50.  The Frisco League saw their two remaining teams fall short of Columbia as the Stoutland boys lost to Wellston-Eskridge 68-55, and the Richland girls couldn’t get past Canton, falling 76-54.

2/9/10 Scores

A night of upsets on the boys side tonight.  State ranked Dadeville is handed their first loss of the year by a very good Weaubleau squad 52-48 making Dadeville 21-1 on the season.  And you’ve heard me talk a bit about Levi Cook.  Well tonight he steps it up and drops 30 for the Pirates as they beat Spokane 66-65.  Jordan Lair lead the Owls with 22.

On the girls side, both class 1 ranked area teams kept rolling as Verona romped over Wheaton 63-18, and Walnut Grove took a 61-52 win over a strong Morrisville team.
