A fun night as always in Springfield at the 33rd Lions Club All-Star Classic pitting the best of the city vs the best of the area. In the girls game, Kylie Williamson of Lighthouse Christian took over down the stretch scoring 11 of the City’s final 15 points as the City girls grab a rare win in the series 56-51. Both Casey Carroll of Kickapoo and Shelby Stewart of Parkview helped out with 11 points each. Nixa’s Emily Walker was the only Area girl in double figures with 16.
Points were much more plentiful in the boys game, but they played a bit longer as the Area boys got two free throws from Zac Hill of Nixa with 1.9 seconds left in the third overtime to win 97-95. Continue reading 2010 Springfield Lions Club All-Star Classic

Another fantastic year of Ozarks hoops. Three state titles courtesy of the Hillcrest boys, and Webb City and Mt. Vernon girls. Tons of teams in the state rankings all year. We saw Hannah Wilkerson run down the all time high school scoring mark, then make a run to Columbia. We witnessed possibly the national high school boys basketball highlight of the year when Trey Starks launched himself into the rafters of Mizzou arena and over Oakville’s Garrett Reeg. We prayed as Stephanie Phillips stopped coaching to renew her fight against cancer. And we rejoiced as she came back to guide her team to the final four. We followed the rise of newcomers to the state rankings. Verona and Richland on the girls side. Thomas Jefferson and Gainesville on the boys. We cheered all the buzzer beaters, big wins, great plays, comebacks, defensive stands, hustle plays, razzle dazzle, and gutsy losses. And now, like always, we say goodbye to those seniors who gave everything they had for their schools, for their towns, and for us, and leave us with so many memories. Here’s the year in review.

Sunday the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association announced the picks for Mr. and Ms. Show-Me Basketball for this year. Mr. Show-Me Basketball is Ricky Kreklow of Rock Bridge. A Missouri signee who averaged 16.8 points and 6 rebounds a game while shooting 36.3% from 3 point range. Ms. Show Me Basketball is Bowling Green’s Anne Marie Hartung. The 6′ 3″ Texas recruit averaged 19.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.8 blocks a game.
Now, I’m not going to deride either one of the honorees. But, I would like to know exactly what criteria are used to select the winners. Continue reading Mr. and Ms. Show-Me Basketball 2010

CLASS 4
At Hammons Student Center, Springfield
- Girls – Webb City 57, St. James 36
- Last year, the key to beating Webb City was to beat their press and stop Kaitlin Jaeger. But as Webb City displayed Saturday against St. James, even if you do hold Jaeger down this year, you’re still likely to get smoked. Balanced scoring and speed by the bucketful carried the Lady Cardinals to the win at HSC. St. James hung around early but a 17-2 Webb run gave them an 18 point lead in the second quarter. St. James used solid free throw shooting to stay close, and pulled within 6 in the third before a 12-4 run by the Lady Cardinals keyed by a Kyndal Clark 3 pointer removed any more suspense. West Plains comes within a last second 3 pointer of pulling the big upset losing to St. James 41-40 as the Lady Tigers hit a shot at the buzzer to win. No such problems for Webb City and Kickapoo who roll to big wins.

What a day yesterday. Four games at the Blue and Gold. Then the KTXR Lady Classic first round with Webb City’s 65-62 overtime win over Midwest City capping off a tremendous day. Here’s a few thoughts from each game before we get to the scores.
Blue and Gold
- Nixa 69, Willard 59 – Nixa is deep, talented, disciplined, well-coached. The only thing that keeps me from saying they are a serious state-title contender is the lack of go to player. But I could very easily see freshman Jalen Norman becoming just that type of player by the end of the year. Continue reading 2009 Holiday Tournament Week – Day 2

So far Dadeville has done nothing to disappoint, they look as good as expected. Jordan Stauffer has TJ looking even better than expected as they continue to overpower teams. Dora has torn through the Koshkonong Tournament, Koshkonong, & Couch so far. Fair Play already owns a win over Wheatland and 2 wins over Greenfield.
