Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost. We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo. The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0. Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short. Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams. The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip. As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys. The Blue & Gold was great. The Tournament of Champions was incredible. And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.
A couple of explanations before we continue. This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class. I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team. In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect? Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class. Who did the best relative to their competition. And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams. So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed. With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

Fair Grove continues to roll despite being 2 players down as they win the big matchup with Skyline 68-54. The Lady Eagles ran up a 14 point lead at the half. Then held off a Skyline charge in the third period. The Lady Tigers closed the gap to 5 going into the final quarter, but Fair Grove outscored them by 9 down the stretch for the final margin. If any doubters were left, this recent stretch since the injuries in which they’ve beaten both Central and now Skyline should have converted them.

Hoops season opened for real last night with girls games all over the place. Verona’s Jenna Chadd made the biggest statement scoring 38 points including eight 3s in Verona’s 81-27 win over Niangua. Branson wins an early matchup of girls contenders 57-55 over Parkview. And after opening with a nice win over Morrisville on Saturday, Fair Grove lays a 60 point victory on Reeds Spring 80-20.

Great softball battle last night as Carthage took the measure of Republic 1-0. Republic actually outhit Carthage 6-4 in the game. But in the bottom of the seventh, Sheyan Irwin found herself at third after a walk, a steal of second, and a sacrifice bunt. Whitney Triplett then stepped up and drove her in to end [...]
