3/3/09 class 1, 2, & 3 district update

I took the roadshow to Aurora last night for the class 1 district 6 boys first round.  The first game went to #5 seed Walnut Grove 64-52 over Niangua.  I only caught the last quarter, but the Tigers looked very poised and controlled as they moved on to face #1 Chadwick.

The next game featured #2 seed Everton against #7 Exeter.  Everton has been a very solid team the last two seasons with Garrett Gladden and Chase Knackstedt leading them.  Exeter has struggled to find wins for a number of years.  But on this night, thanks to a couple of players who seemed like they couldn’t miss, Exeter played like a team ready to extend their season.  Everton was certainly not at their sharpest and really seemed sluggish at the start but still got out to a 4-0 lead.  Then Zach Wubker of Exeter hit a three from the corner and the battle was joined.  Neither team found the hoop much and quarter one ended with Everton on top 8-7.  Things picked up in the second as Gladden began to find the range and Exeter knocked down 3 more treys to enter halftime up 26-25.  Finally in the third quarter the dam broke.  Two more Exeter threes and Keith Hayworth’s hot shooting had the lead at 35-31 when Everton embarked on a 17-2 run grabbing an 11 point lead as they entered the third quarter.  Gladden began to take charge down low and Knackstedt, who only had 3 points in the first half, would score 17 second half points for the Tigers.  But Exeter would not go quietly as Wubker would find the hoop from long range 4 times in the final quarter finishing with 7 threes for the game.  Hayworth hit 3 of his own as Exeter long range bombing kept them around.  But both Gladden and Knackstedt hit their free throws in the final quarter and another run of 13-3 made the final score 71-55 Everton.  Gladden had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Knackstedt 20 points for Everton.  Wubker scored all of his 21 on 7 threes, and Hayworth added 18 for Exeter.

Got to catch a great game tonight and one of the better small school players in the area with Pierce City and Dietrick Sooter taking on the Southwest Trojans in Washburn.  In a game that was close throughout, the free throw shooting of the Eagles made the difference as Pierce City wins 76-69.  For the night, Pierce City was 19 of 24 from the line including 11 of 12 in the second half.  Sooter lead 4 players in double figures with 26 including 5 3-pointers.  For Southwest, Levi Roberts had 23 and Josh Hartin 21 but it wasn’t enough to keep the Eagles from winning their fourth game in a row in Washburn.

The highlight of big school play came as Hillcrest snapped Kickapoo’s 65 game Ozark Conference win streak dropping them 62-43.  The Hornets held Alex Hall to just 5 points on the night and were lead by James Taylor’s 17 point and 14 rebounds.  Hillcrest also got 17 from Derek Chaney and 16 from Dorial Green to go to 7-2 on the year.

It was a good night to be a Lady Eagle.  The Nixa girls get their revenge in round 2 as they defeat archrival Ozark 45-38.  Bri Anton led all scorers with 18 but Nixa makes a 9 point lead entering the fourth quarter stand up.  Aly Stock & Abby Bracker each had 12 for the Lady Eagles.  And Fair Grove again shows balanced scoring with 5 players going for 8 or more to down Hillcrest 69-56.  Mollie Gavin had 19 for Fair Grove to lead all scorers.
