Since we’re halfway through baseball season, I thought I’d better do our basketball review before it gets totally lost. We’ll always remember this as the year of the ladies in the Ozarks as every state championship game features a team from SW Mo. The Nixa Lady Eagles, Exeter Lady Tigers, and Sparta Lady Trojans each bring home state titles with Sparta running the table at a perfect 31-0. Joining those three in the Show-Me Showdown finals were the Webb City Lady Cardinals & Skyline Lady Tigers who saw their quest to repeat as champs come up 1 point short. Columbia was crowded with Ozarks teams. The Bakersfield, Couch, and Fair Grove girls made the trip. As did the Chadwick, Laquey, Miller, and Blue Eye boys. The Blue & Gold was great. The Tournament of Champions was incredible. And we were treated to one of the best all around basketball seasons ever.
A couple of explanations before we continue. This year I’m naming a team & MVP for each class. I define MVP as the person who has the biggest impact on their team. In other words, take that player off the team and what is the effect? Player of the year is based solely on basketball accomplishments regardless of class. Who did the best relative to their competition. And game of the year means a game between two Ozarks teams. So you won’t see Central beating Rock Bridge listed. With that, here’s some notable moments from the 08-09 basketball season, our All-OzarksSports teams, and a list of seniors that we say ‘Good bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to.

Had a great time Saturday night at the All-Scoreboard Team banquet put on by Guy Newcomb of The High School Scoreboard Show and The Scoreboard Guy website. I was one of the individuals that Guy solicited for input on the teams and he asked if I would be one of the speakers at the banquet. I was happy to do so as it gave me a chance to see some of the coaches, parents, and players I already know, and get to know some new faces. Plus I hardly ever pass up an opportunity to talk.

Fourteen Ozarks teams remain alive in the smaller classes on the road to Columbia. By Saturday evening that number will be at least 12, and most likely less. Here’s a quick look at each matchup and what to expect. Except for class 3 games at Springfield, all boys games are at 1 PM, and all girls games at 2:45 PM.

CLASS 1
District 2 at Bakersfield
Eminence has already beaten Lesterville twice this year and stud Austin Brewer is now back. After scoring 12 points his first game back, can he get back to near full capacity?
- Eminence
- Lesterville
- Dora
- Bakersfield
- Bradleyville
- Bunker
- Lutie
Prediction: This looks pretty clear cut. Eminence hasn’t needed Brewer to beat Lesterville yet. They do even better with him.
District 5 at Bolivar

Opposite results for a couple of undefeated girls teams last night. Couch remains unbeaten by pounding Koshkonong in Thayer tournament 66-16. But New Covenant drops their first game of the year 46-44 to Reeds Spring in the Galena Lady Bear Classic.
For the game of the night, we go all the way to Iberia where the Richland Bears trailed rival Dixon at the half by 10, 37-27. But the Bears came out red hot in the second half scoring 65 in the final two quarters to come from behind and win 92-80.
The finish of the night goes to the Lebanon/Rolla contest. In a low-scoring affair, Lebanon trailed 31-29 until Kylie Dudley hit the only 3-pointer of the night for either team at the buzzer to give the Yellowjackerts the 32-31 win.
And individual performance of the night goes to Houston’s Kyle Poynter who poured in 47 in the Tigers 89-72 win over Naylor in the opening round of the Liberty tournament.

A number of big boys clashes this evening around the Ozarks. At Ozark, Branson ran out to a 22 point lead at the end of the first then held off Ozark from their to win 89-79. Mike Wiebe had 26 and Tate Unruh 24 for the Pirates. Seth Arnold lead Ozark with 26. At my favorite gym in the Ozarks, the Pit at Central, the Bulldogs won the showdown with Kickapoo 50-45 despite Alex Hall’s 21 pts. And in Thayer, the Bobcats win the rematch with previously undefeated Eminence 54-52 to move to 9-2 on the year.

Friday night I made the roadie up to Dade County to watch the Chadwick/Everton clash in Everton. Lot’s of things had me fired up about this matchup. A couple of ‘name’ headliners in Garrett Gladden for Everton and Shaun Thomas for Chadwick, underrated #2 guys with Everton’s Chase Knackstedt and Chadwick’s Nathan Hale, a clash of styles as Chadwick’s relentless pressure would be taking on Everton’s deliberate half court mentality, and some folks in Everton that I’d exchanged emails with that I wanted to meet. Off I went with great expectations in full effect. Continue reading In the gym – Chadwick at Everton
