50! Lot’s going on last night but we’ll start with that number. That’s how many points Houston’s Kyle Poynter scored in the Tigers 65-62 loss to Willow Springs. That ties the all-time school scoring record. But Poynter was not able to get a game tying three to go in the final minutes to allow the Bears to leave Houston with the win. Five shots from behind the arc and a 19 for 20 performance from the free throw line highlight Poynter’s night.
Four conference championships got wrapped up also. In the marquee matchup, Nixa nipped Branson to win the COC Large and go to 25-1 on the season. Jordan Keeney lead the way with 24 points. Despite losing to Bolivar 72-69, Rogersville still claims the COC Small title via Marshfield’s 69-62 win over Reeds Spring. The Wolves would have claimed a share of the title with a victory. Hillcrest is the undisputed champion of the Ozark Conference with their 67-47 win over Marshfield. And Strafford claims the Mid-Lakes crown by downing Fair Grove 52-46.

The headline matchup of the night goes to the Webb City Lady Cardinals as the defeat Nixa 61-46 in the showdown of state ranked squads. Hailey Roderique lead the way in scoring with 21 points for Webb City. Kaitlin Jaeger registered a double double with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and blocked 6 shots.
And I attended a strong ‘Game of the Year’ candidate as the Richland Bears welcomed Frisco League rival Licking in for Homecoming. The Wildcat’s Ben Denbow registered a double double with 25 points and 10 rebounds while Josh Hood scored 28. Richland countered with guard Pat Poston scoring 38, but it was Jacob Shelton’s jumper from the wing as the buzzer sounded that game the Bears a 91-90 win.

It’s a night for overtime on the boys side as three games see bonus basketball. Marshfield needs every one of Utah Findley’s 28 points and Jared Greenlee’s 24 to down Catholic 63-61 in OT. State ranked Spokane recovers from a furious Clever rally to win in extra period 66-60 behind Dylan Price’s 29 points. Fair Play continues their strong season with an extra period 69-61 win over Morrisville. And Pierce City and Lockwood enjoyed playing each other so much they decided to go two extra periods before the Eagles win 62-60.
One game that didn’t go into overtime may serve as the coming out party for one of the underrated boys players I mentioned earlier today. Richland’s Pat Poston scored 40 tonight as the Bears downed Macks Creek 105-78.

Some great matchups of top level teams last night. Starting on the girls side with Mt. Vernon traveling to Stockton. The Lady Tigers were on a roll coming into this game having beaten Skyline handily. But it wasn’t to be as the Lady Mountaineers take the 60-43 road win.
On the boys side, great finishes in a number of important games. Spokane knocked off Strafford 47-45 despite Conner Wilson’s 25 points. Jeremy Dresslaer scored 32 to lead Clever to a 64-59 win over Pleasant Hope. In a matchup of Blue and Gold division winners, Branson defeats Ozark 73-60. Avery Dingman had 29 for the Pirates. A rising Willard team defeats Webb City 50-49. And Neosho overcame a 22-4 deficit to rally and defeat Republic in overtime 58-56 as Corey Crandall hit 2 free throws with 4.5 seconds left for the winning margin.
Finally, on the wrestling mat, Waynesville gets a big win defeating state ranked Rolla 33-27. And in a clash of state ranked teams, it was no contest as #1 Neosho crushed #8 Carl Junction 67-9.

Clever & Miller watch as Jeremy Dresslaer hits two of his 30 points
Saw a great early season game tonight in Miller as the Cardinals took on Clever. Clever was fresh off a championship in their own tournament while it was the first game of the season for Miller. The Cardinals jumped out to an 11-7 lead midway through the first period as Justin Jack hit two early 3-pointers. From there, Clever went on a 14-0 that extended into the second period. But now down 21-11, Miller responded with their own 8-0 run to get back in the game and they went to halftime with Clever leading 23-21. Miller had to feel good being down only 2 as they shot an abysmal 6 of 27 from the field in the first half.
