Missouri Challenge Cup - SW Girls Team

The first team released on the girls side of the Missouri Challenge Cup just happens to be the Southwest Missouri squad.  A great pair of coaches in Nixa’s Jim Middleton and Sparta’s Jerry Songer.  They each bring a pair of players having state championship experience with Allison Stevens and Kayla Coffer from Sparta, and Bethanie Funderburk and Emily Walker of Nixa.  Kickapoo is well represented by Makenzie Smith and Casey Carroll.  Of the remaining five players, four are from class 2 schools (Bridget Hanafin of Clever, Hannah Wilkerson from Miller, Hartville’s Maggie Arnall, and Whitney Mills of Thayer) and one (Bailey Irvine of Hillcrest) is from a class 5.

That’s a great lineup that has a great task ahead of them to equal or better last year’s result.

Final Day Show Me Showdown II Updates

And here we go folks, the final day of basketball for the year.  One team was expected to be here.  One operated under the radar without many folks noticing.  But both Mt. Vernon and Thayer will try to make history today.  Here’s our schedule.  We’ll start the updates as soon as we can.

  • Noon – Class 3 girls championship – Cardinal Ritter (26-4) vs Mt. Vernon (29-3)
  • 1:40 – Class 3 boys championship – Cardinal Ritter (26-4) vs Hogan Prep (23-6)
  • 3:20 – Class 2 girls championship – Thayer (28-3) vs Harrisburg (30-0)
  • 5:00 – Class 2 boys championship – Bernie (28-4) vs Sturgeon (31-0)
  • 6:40 – Class 1 girls championship – Montrose (30-0) vs Jefferson (27-3)
  • 8:20 – Class 1 boys championship – Scott County Central (28-2) vs Pilot Grove (28-3)

12:32 – We’re at halftime of the class 3 girls state championship game and Mt. Vernon is up 17-8 over Cardinal Ritter.  Just brutal defense from the Lady Mountaineers so far.  Only 7 total points scored in the second quarter as Mt. Vernon had a 14-4 lead after one.

12:56 – The Lady Mountaineers 3 point shooting helped them open up a sizable lead and they’re now up 37-17 with 5 minutes in the fourth quarter.

Day 1 Show Me Showdown II Updates

Six games to cover today as teams try to move into the ultimate high school game, the state championship.  We’ll pick up our coverage just before the 1:40 start of the Clever boys taking on undefeated Sturgeon, and the Mt. Vernon girls facing Maryville. We’ll keep going right through the 8:20 finale between Miller and 29-0 Harrisburg.  Losers play Friday for third, winners play Saturday for all the marbles.  Should be a great day.

1:32 – And it’s just about go time for the Clever boys and Mt. Vernon girls.  Lawrence County is in the house with both Mt. Vernon team and the Miller girls.  And just missed getting Verona in too.  Big year for the LC.  In the early games Bernie pulls out a 1 point win over Wellston-Eskridge 69-68, and the defending class 3 girls champs Cardinal Ritter handle Macon 50-42.

2:03 – First quarter scores courtesy of The Scoreboard Guy.  The Sturgeon Fightin’ Fishes have jumped all over Clever 19 to 6.  And the Mt. Vernon girls hold a 12-9 lead after the first quarter.  Both teams are very good defensively.
