Week 1 review
By Joboo | September 3, 2008
Now that the dust has settled on the holiday weekend and my moving into a new position at work, let’s take a look back at the carnage that was week 1 of the high school football season.
While my value as a prognosticator is yet to be determined, there is no doubting that I am a prophet. For yea verily in the book of OzarksSports, chapter of Football Preview, did the great prophet Joboo sayeth of his picks “Comprehensive, informative, entertaining, and ultimately pointless because the teams will make fools of us anyhow.” And some teams couldn’t wait beyond week one to make me look foolish. So to describe the first week, let’s play a little game I like to call…
THE GOOD
- Ozark(#8 class 5) at Carthage (#2 class 4)
- Prediction: Should be entertaining and Carthage should take this one.
- Result: Carthage 54, Ozark 33. Mission accomplished
- Glendale at Joplin
- Prediction: My preseason pick was Joplin. But without Noirfalise, they will need his replacement Ron King to really step up in order to win.
- Result: Joplin 35, Glendale 28. King had 115 yards and a TD. Dane Kolkmeyer 98 yards on 6 receptions.
- Salem at Mountain Grove (#5 class 3)
- Prediction: Mountain Grove wins their home opener.
- Result: Mountain Grove 41, Salem 14
- Helias at Waynesville (#5 class 5)
- Prediction: I took Helias originally. Waynesville has lost a lot from last years champs. But a little motivation can go a long way.
- Result: Helias 11, Waynesville 8.
- Seneca at Neosho
- Prediction: Neosho to win at home.
- Result: Neosho 33, Seneca 14. Now will Seneca grow from this.
- Fair Grove at Buffalo
- Prediction: I’m taking the Eagles speed to neutralize Cody Rosier’s defense.
- Result: Fair Grove 48, Buffalo 18. Both Caleb Schaffitzel and the Eagles look really good.
- Liberal at Miller (#5 class 1)
- Prediction:Miller for the win at home.
- Result: Miller 24, Liberal 14. Liberal appears to be a good team.
- Rogersville at Aurora
- Prediction: Rogersville is too much for the Houn Dawgs.
- Result: Rogersville 34, Aurora 6.
- Liberty at Portageville
- Prediction: Liberty to start off the year with a win on the road.
- Result: Liberty 53, Portageville 6. Will this be the breakthrough year Liberty has been looking for.
- Carl Junction at Lamar
- Prediction: The Bulldogs win but Lamar may make it close.
- Result: Carl Junction 14, Lamar 0. We may not know the truth on these teams for a few more weeks.
- Nevada at Bolivar
- Prediction: Bolivar should win big.
- Result: Bolivar 45, Nevada 0. That would qualify as winning big.
- Pleasant Hope at Osceola
- Prediction: Osceola takes it.
- Result: Osceola 42, Pleasant Hope 6. Looks like a long year for the Pirates.
- McAuley at Marionville
- Prediction: The Comets still have enough to win this one.
- Result: Marionville 20, McAuley 14 (OT). The Comets are still good, but not great.
- Ash Grove at Sarcoxie
- Prediction: I think Ash Grove takes it.
- Ash Grove 26, Sarcoxie 14. Good start for the Pirates on the road.
- Parkview at Lebanon
- Prediction: Lebanon continues Parkview’s woes.
- Result: Lebanon 61, Parkview 36. Wow! The new school spread wins a basketball game.
- Greenfield at Diamond
- Prediction: Greenfield gets an important road win in conference play.
- Result: Greenfield 42, Diamond 0. Impressive even against a depleted Diamond team.
- Ava at Marshfield
- Prediction: Marshfield wins on home turf.
- Result: Marshfield 43, Ava 8. Defended the home ground.
- McDonald County at Monett (#1 class 3)
- Prediction: The Cubs D wins it. But watch to see if they can generate points.
- Result: Monett 61, McDonald County 0. See, what I meant was can they generate more than 50 points. Yikes!
- Pierce City at Jasper
- Prediction: Pierce City opens up another strong campaign with a win.
- Result: Pierce City 49, Jasper 12.
- Reeds Spring at Strafford
- Prediction: The Indians control the line and win.
- Result: Strafford 40, Reeds Spring 2. The Indians controlled the line and won.
- Hillcrest at West Plains
- Prediction: The Zizzers can be tough at home. But I think the Hornets will be too much offensively.
- Result: Hillcrest 49, West Plains 33. Too much O from the Hornets.
- Skyline at Sacred Heart - Saturday
- Prediction: Skyline comes back from Sedalia with a W.
- Result: Skyline 63, Sacred Heart 7. Great start for the Tigers.
THE BAD
- Webb City (#4 class 4) at Harrisonville (#3 class 4)
- Prediction: A strong defense and a good home field advantage in the opening game of the season makes my pick Harrisonville. If they happen to meet again in the playoffs though….
- Result: Webb City 27, Harrisonville 21. Great game. A rematch would be very welcome.
- Cassville at Branson
- Prediction: I went with Cassville. But I’m nervous on this one.
- Result: Branson 25, Cassville 14. Another two teams that we’ll have to wait to know for sure about.
- Thayer (#2 class 1) at Central
- Prediction: I’m going with Central to take this one. Could be a real track meet.
- Result: Thayer 27, Central 6. The Bobcats don’t look like they’ve missed a step.
- Rolla at Willard
- Prediction: Willard has a good number of returnees. They win at home.
- Result: Rolla 31, Willard 20. Strong running game for Rolla. How will it work in the OC?
- Republic at Nixa
- Prediction: Republic takes the early conference road win.
- Result: Nixa 17, Republic 16. COC road wins are precious. No soup for the Tigers.
- El Dorado Springs at Stockton
- Prediction: Stockton open the season with a win.
- Result: El Dorado Springs 13, Stockton 12. Good early win for the Bulldogs.
- Camdenton at Kickapoo
- Prediction: The Chiefs will be outmanned by the Lakers and fall at home.
- Result: Kickapoo 24, Camdenton 21. The Lakers didn’t look bad, but the Chiefs are much improved.
THE UGLY
- Catholic at Willow Springs
- Prediction:The home field gives a slight edge to the Bears.
- Result: Catholic 35, Willow Springs 6. Really expected better from the Bears.
- Rich Hill at Lockwood
- Prediction: Lockwood for the win.
- Result: Rich Hill 41, Lockwood 12. Yikes! Lockwood had some holes to fill.
- Cabool (#4 class 1) at Houston
- Prediction: Cabool easily over the Tigers.
- Result: Houston 12, Cabool 0. Not easily. Not at all.
- East Newton at Mt. Vernon
- Prediction: The Mountaineers have more left in the tank and win it.
- Result: East Newton 41, Mt. Vernon 12. East Newton has speed to burn.
Record for the week: 22-11. Not bad for the opening week.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Ryan Howerton, QB - Lebanon
- The Yellowjackets debuted their spread offence and Howerton made it look golden. 24 for 32 passing for 495 yards and 8 TDs. He also rushed 5 times for 23 yards and a TD. And converted 7 of his 8 PAT attempts. Will we see a better offensive performance this season?
