Week 10 picks
By Joboo | October 30, 2008
And here we are. Week 10. A handful of teams are in. But most spots are up for grabs still. Can Willow Springs, Willard, and Reeds Spring get into the playoffs despite being winless when districts started? Can the undefeated teams (Webb City, Fair Grove, Monett) make it through their districts unscathed? Will any of the state-ranked teams be left sitting at home?
The last week of the regular season is here. We’re less than a week from the playoffs baby! LET’S GET IT ON!!!
CLASS 1
District 3 - Thayer has district title in hand already and will look to add more misery to Cabool’s disappointing season. Miller and Marionville are playing for a chance to move on.
- Miller, 8-1 (#7 class 1) at Marionville, 3-6
- With everything to play for, Miller should win easily.
- Thayer, 7-1 (#4 class 1) at Cabool, 1-8
- Thayer should take it even with the pedal only half down.
District 4- Lockwood and McAuley are in, they just need to settle who gets to play Miller at home or Thayer on the road. Jasper and Sarcoxie looking to end on a high note.
- Lockwood, 4-5 at McAuley, 4-5
- Tigers are playing well last 6 games, I give them the edge.
- Jasper, 1-8 at Sarcoxie, 2-7
- The Bears should get the home win here.
District 5 - Rich Hill and Greenfield have the district title to decide, home field for the first round, and some statewide recognition for the winner. Since tough loss to Miller, Greenfield has rolled everyone. Rich Hill has been equally impressive in tough WEMO conference.
- Rich Hill, 8-1 at Greenfield, 8-1
- Greenfield has been improving a little each week. With that and home field, I’ll call them to win.
- Liberal, 5-4 at Osceola, 3-6
- Both teams disappointed with how the year turned out. I think Liberal finishes it well.
CLASS 2
District 9 - A lot to play for here. Newly state-ranked Liberty wants to show they deserve that spot and grab the district title. Houston doesn’t want to let a good comeback season end just yet. Willow Springs would love to get a winning streak going.
- Willow Springs, 1-8 at Liberty, 7-2 (#10 class 2)
- Houston, 5-4 at Cuba, 3-6, Friday
District 10 - Winner take all match in Strafford. The Indians would love a second shot at Liberty. Fair Grove’s toughest decision will be how long to play the starters when Caleb Schaffitzel is within striking distance of some serious records.
- Ash Grove , 4-5 at Strafford, 6-3
- Indians have responded well to their 2 earlier losses. They will here to. Strafford.
- Pleasant Hope, 0-9 at Fair Grove, 9-0 (#7 class 2)
- Fair Grove.
District 11- Only way Lamar is in danger is if they lose by 13 or more. I don’t see that happening at all. Pierce City prepares for the playoffs by closing out their SRVC schedule. Stockton is playing much better, but they need a LOT of help to move on.
- Pierce City, 5-4 at Diamond, 1-8
- Eagles should cruise here.
- Stockton, 3-6 at Lamar, 4-5
- The difference between these teams is much bigger than one game. Lamar easily.
District 12 - El Dorado Springs and Skyline are pretty much playing against each other for one spot as Warsaw has virtually locked up a berth. Edge to Skyline as they have a much easier game.
- El Dorado Springs, 4-5 at Warsaw, 5-4
- Like Lamar, Warsaw plays in a tough conference and is better than their record. Warsaw.
- Skyline, 6-3 at Cole Camp, 5-4, Friday
- Skyline shouldn’t have any problem here.
CLASS 3
District 7 - Salem secured some respect with close loss to Sullivan last week. This week, they should secure a playoff berth with a win.
- Salem, 7-2 at St. James, 1-8, Friday
- Salem should take this easily to setup trip to central Mo.
District 10 - Panthers can win district and seal another undefeated SCA season with a win tonight. Rogersville wants to secure a playoff spot and hope for a rematch. Ava has hope and is capable of playing spoiler as can Buffalo.
- Ava, 4-5 at Mountain Grove, 8-1 (#4 Class 3)
- Rogersville, 6-3 at Buffalo, 3-6
District 11 - Can the Wolves finish the deal? If we see the team of the last 2 weeks, they should. Catholic and Mt. Vernon have everything to play for here. Mt. Vernon needs help and I don’t think arch rival Aurora will give any willingly.
- Reeds Spring, 2-7 at Catholic, 3-6, Friday
- Is it magic, or have they gelled at the right time? We’ll find out. I’ll give them the nod.
- Aurora, 0-9 at Mt. Vernon, 4-5
- The most heated rivalry maybe in the state. I think Mt. Vernon gets to celebrate ending their rivals season 0-10.
District 12 - Nothing settled here yet. Cassville has to win to have a chance. If Seneca wins, they’re in. If Monett wins, they’re champs. Beyond that, it’s all up in the air. Any of the three could be left out still. Such is life in the Big 8. I said at the start of the year that Seneca had the type of game to beat Monett. Smash mouth, wear you down, running. We’ll see tonight.
- Seneca, 4-5 at Monett, 9-0 (#2 class 3)
- I gotta think Monett defends the home field tonight.
- East Newton, 4-5 at Cassville, 6-3
- Cassville sticks to their game plan and wins.
CLASS 4
District 1- A good size win secures a spot for the Zizzers. They should be able to get it against a mediocre Poplar Bluff team.
- West Plains, 2-7 at Poplar Bluff, 4-5
- West Plains wins to get another trip to state.
District 10 - Bolivar is in and can really put a cap on a disappointing season for Marshfield. The winner of the Sub-.500 Bowl (thanks Mike) will join them in the playoffs and claim some legitimacy.
- Hillcrest, 2-7 at Willard, 1-8
- Hornets played a fine game last week. They look to have found their stride. Hillcrest.
- Marshfield, 4-5 at Bolivar, 8-1
- The rumbling in Marshfield gets louder. Bolivar wins.
District 11 - Neosho has won this one and should have a easy time with the Mustangs. Republic has a chance to salvage the season with a win tonight. While Branson can book a return trip to Webb City if they win.
- Branson, 7-2 at Republic, 3-6
- The Pirates have come too far to not end with a trip to the playoffs. Branson wins.
- Neosho, 6-3 at McDonald County, 1-8
- Shawn Flannigan has the Wildcats playing solid ball. No problem for them here.
District 12 - Nevada is still alive, but Carthage seems to have recovered themselves. It’ll be tough sledding for them to advance. Webb City gets some work before hosting their first round game.
- Webb City, 9-0 (#3 class 4) at Carl Junction, 6-3
- CJ is stumbling to the line. Webb City easily.
- Nevada, 2-7 at Carthage, 7-2 (#10 class 4)
- Carthage finally looks a little hungry. They win.
CLASS 5
District 6 - All four teams are still alive in the Ozarks wildest district. If Camdenton wins, the drama is over. If the Lakers fall, the Friday night Waynesville/Lebanon game gets real interesting.
- Waynesville, 5-4 at Lebanon, 6-3, Friday
- Should be a real even matchup, but I’m giving the edge to Lebanon.
- Camdenton, 7-2 at Rolla, 6-3
- I think Camdenton rebounds and gets the win.
District 7 - Ozark is at home with their feet up. They get to watch Glendale and Nixa fight it out for second. Can Parkview get a second win against a struggling Kickapoo squad?
- Nixa, 4-5 at Glendale, 3-6, Friday
- Glendale is a different team now than the one that went 0-5 to start the year. They win.
- Kickapoo, 4-5 at Parkview, 1-8
- If for no other reason than I think it’s a sign of things to come, I’ll take Parkview.
District 8 - Not many teams in the state pulled a tougher district than Central. Ray-Pec and Belton scored 105 combined on the Bulldogs. And Lee’s Summit West is 1, as good as Ray-Pec and 2, ticked off after losing to Ray-Pec last week.
- Lee’s Summit West, 6-3 (#5 class 5) at Central, 3-6
- Bulldogs end year on a down note as the Titans roll.
CLASS 6
District 7 - Nice win for Joplin last week to keep their district hopes alive. Dane Kolkmeyer and Devin St. Clair need more press. Unfortunately, Joplin needs more defense. Rockhurst is one of the best in the nation. It would be a huge upset if Joplin won.
- Joplin, 7-2 at Rockhurst, 8-1 (#1 class 6), Friday
- Just don’t see any way. Rockhurst in a cakewalk.
