Week 10 review
By Joboo | November 3, 2008
A great final week to the regular season with all the drama we’ve come to expect. Familiar playoff faces Camdenton and Marionville are staying home. Close bu no cigar for hopefuls Reeds Spring, Rolla, and Hillcrest. Rematches and potential rematches are all over the place in the first two rounds. And we end the regular season with 3 undefeated teams (Fair Grove, Monett, and Webb City) , and 2 winless teams (Aurora and Pleasant Hope) . Bring on the playoffs.
CLASS 1
District 3
- Miller, 8-1 (#7 class 1) at Marionville, 3-6
- With everything to play for, Miller should win easily.
- Miller 43, Marionville 14. Wasn’t quite as easy as it seems as they were tied at the half. Darin Clark goes for 237 and 5 TDs.
- Thayer, 7-1 (#4 class 1) at Cabool, 1-8
- Thayer should take it even with the pedal only half down.
- Thayer 48, Cabool 7. Bobcats are ready to make a serious run.
District 4
- Lockwood, 4-5 at McAuley, 4-5
- Tigers are playing well last 6 games, I give them the edge.
- Lockwood 32, McAuley 26. Just enough to get it done for Lockwood.
- Jasper, 1-8 at Sarcoxie, 2-7
- The Bears should get the home win here.
- Jasper 29, Sarcoxie 16. Great way to close out the year for the Eagles.
District 5
- Rich Hill, 8-1 at Greenfield, 8-1
- Greenfield has been improving a little each week. With that and home field, I’ll call them to win.
- Greenfield 13, Rich Hill 6. Great win for Greenfield. Not only a win over a quality team, they secured homefield for a possible rematch.
- Liberal, 5-4 at Osceola, 3-6
- Both teams disappointed with how the year turned out. I think Liberal finishes it well.
- Liberal 73, Osceola 40. I didn’t know basketball season had started already. Got to finish that preview up now.
CLASS 2
District 9
- Willow Springs, 1-8 at Liberty, 7-2 (#10 class 2)
- Liberty 48, Willow Springs 6. No fooling around here. Liberty puts it away early and leaves no doubt.
- Houston, 5-4 at Cuba, 3-6, Friday
- Houston 62, Cuba 22. Speaking of leaving no doubt. Tigers scored early and often to ensure their 2nd place finish. When David Weybright is on, this team is dangerous.
District 10
- Ash Grove , 4-5 at Strafford, 6-3
- Indians have responded well to their 2 earlier losses. They will here too. Strafford.
- Strafford 48, Ash Grove 0. Should be a phenomenal rematch with Liberty Wednesday night.
- Pleasant Hope, 0-9 at Fair Grove, 9-0 (#7 class 2)
- Fair Grove.
- Fair Grove 41, Pleasant Hope 0. Caleb Schaffitzel, 10 carries, 167 yards, 5 TDs. 5 TDs on 10 carries? Unbelievable.
District 11
- Pierce City, 5-4 at Diamond, 1-8
- Eagles should cruise here.
- Pierce City 42, Diamond 0. Cruise they did. Now they go to Warsaw.
- Stockton, 3-6 at Lamar, 4-5
- The difference between these teams is much bigger than one game. Lamar easily.
- Lamar 47, Stockton 0. I’ve said it all year, this Tiger team is good. Now they have homefield in the first two rounds.
District 12
- El Dorado Springs, 4-5 at Warsaw, 5-4
- Like Lamar, Warsaw plays in a tough conference and is better than their record. Warsaw.
- Warsaw 49, El Dorado Springs 15. A good year for the Bulldogs, but Warsaw was just too good.
- Skyline, 6-3 at Cole Camp, 5-4, Friday
- Skyline shouldn’t have any problem here.
- Cole Camp 27, Skyline 26. Looks like a bit of a letdown once their playoff spot was ensured.
CLASS 3
District 7
- Salem, 7-2 at St. James, 1-8, Friday
- Salem should take this easily to setup trip to central Mo.
- Salem 49, St. James 13. Don’t overlook Salem in the playoffs. They are capable of beating good teams as they showed against Liberty.
District 10
- Ava, 4-5 at Mountain Grove, 8-1 (#4 Class 3)
- Mountain Grove 49, Ava 27. Another 5 TDs for Evan Williams. And they get to stay home for the first round.
- Rogersville, 6-3 at Buffalo, 3-6
- Rogersville 35, Buffalo 24. Doesn’t exactly inspire confidence going into the playoffs, but Rogersville is still capable. If they want it.
District 11
- Reeds Spring, 2-7 at Catholic, 3-6, Friday
- Is it magic, or have they gelled at the right time? We’ll find out. I’ll give them the nod.
- Catholic 33, Reeds Spring 12. Magic? Some. But Catholic just dominated the ground game to clinch a spot in the playoffs.
- Aurora, 0-9 at Mt. Vernon, 4-5
- The most heated rivalry maybe in the state. I think Mt. Vernon gets to celebrate ending their rivals season 0-10.
- Mt. Vernon 54, Aurora 0. Think the Mountaineers enjoyed that? I’ll bet they did.
District 12
- Seneca, 4-5 at Monett, 9-0 (#2 class 3)
- I gotta think Monett defends the home field tonight.
- Monett 35, Seneca 0. Monett looks ready. Maybe being moved to #2 has lit a fire in them.
- East Newton, 4-5 at Cassville, 6-3
- Cassville sticks to their game plan and wins.
- Cassville 42, East Newton 7. Cats run off 42 straight after TD on opening drive for East Newton.
CLASS 4
District 1- A good size win secures a spot for the Zizzers. They should be able to get it against a mediocre Poplar Bluff team.
- West Plains, 2-7 at Poplar Bluff, 4-5
- West Plains wins to get another trip to state.
- West Plains 31, Poplar Bluff 6. 226 from Tommy Meyer. The Zizzers chose the right time (again) to kick it in drive.
District 10
- Hillcrest, 2-7 at Willard, 1-8
- Hornets played a fine game last week. They look to have found their stride. Hillcrest.
- Willard 23, Hillcrest 20. Wild finish ends up with gutsy all or nothing call for Hillcrest. Goodbye to Mikael Cooper-Falls. Hello to 3 more years of Dorial Green.
- Marshfield, 4-5 at Bolivar, 8-1
- The rumbling in Marshfield gets louder. Bolivar wins.
- Bolivar 43, Marshfield 7. Think the Liberators would like that game with Mountain Grove back?
District 11
- Branson, 7-2 at Republic, 3-6
- The Pirates have come too far to not end with a trip to the playoffs. Branson wins.
- Branson 39, Republic 28. Republic wanted it bad, but Branson would not quit.
- Neosho, 6-3 at McDonald County, 1-8
- Shawn Flannigan has the Wildcats playing solid ball. No problem for them here.
- Neosho 61, McDonald County 12. Hope they saved some of those points for Carthage. They should need them.
District 12
- Webb City, 9-0 (#3 class 4) at Carl Junction, 6-3
- CJ is stumbling to the line. Webb City easily.
- Webb City 40, Carl Junction 14. To win another state title, the Cardinals will have to defeat at least 2 teams twice this year. We know how that went last year.
- Nevada, 2-7 at Carthage, 7-2 (#10 class 4)
- Carthage finally looks a little hungry. They win.
- Carthage 68, Nevada 28. This is more like it. The Carthage team we’ve been looking for all year.
CLASS 5
District 6
- Waynesville, 5-4 at Lebanon, 6-3, Friday
- Should be a real even matchup, but I’m giving the edge to Lebanon.
- Waynesville 28, Lebanon 21. Beaten by Camdenton, down in the fourth to Rolla, trailed Lebanon in the second, but the Tigers are still standing. There’s some state champion left in them yet.
- Camdenton, 7-2 at Rolla, 6-3
- I think Camdenton rebounds and gets the win.
- Rolla 41, Camdenton 21. When I said rebounds, I meant get an early start on basketball practice. Nice win by Rolla.
District 7
- Nixa, 4-5 at Glendale, 3-6, Friday
- Glendale is a different team now than the one that went 0-5 to start the year. They win.
- Glendale 33, Nixa 7. The rematch with Lebanon should be interesting given how they’ve done against run oriented teams.
- Kickapoo, 4-5 at Parkview, 1-8
- If for no other reason than I think it’s a sign of things to come, I’ll take Parkview.
- Kickapoo 42, Parkview 21. Early prediction, Parkview is a darkhorse to watch next year.
District 8
- Lee’s Summit West, 6-3 (#5 class 5) at Central, 3-6
- Bulldogs end year on a down note as the Titans roll.
- Lee’s Summit West 52, Central 7. Not as close as the score indicates. Why does Central continue to be the team to get stuck in this district when 5 other class 5 teams are in the Springfield area?
CLASS 6
District 7
- Joplin, 7-2 at Rockhurst, 8-1 (#1 class 6), Friday
- Just don’t see any way. Rockhurst in a cakewalk.
- Rockhurst 68, Joplin 7. There’s a reason why ‘The Rock’ is nationally ranked.
Record for the week: 27-7. Total whiff on class 5 district 6.
Record for the year: 229-82. .736 for the year. I’m cool with that.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Tee Helsel, QB, Branson
- With the chips down, Helsel refused to let Branson’s season end short of the playoffs. 166 yards and 4 TDs rushing and a 35 yard interception return for a TD before the half to give them momentum. He then scored the go ahead TD in the third, and the 26 yard backbreaker to win the game and secure Branson’s return to the playoffs.
