Week 2 picks

22-11. Not bad at all. Especially when you consider what a wild week it was. Consider, that the #4 team in the state in class 1 lost to a team that was 0-10 last year. That 3 area teams scored 33 points or more and lost. That a class 1 team beat a class 5. That scoring was up by almost a touchdown a game versus the first week of last year. That a Will Christian coached team passed for almost 500 yards and 8 touchdowns. I mean really. Anything is possible. Government may actually start doing what’s right. The Cubs may win the World Series. Tom Cruise may go straight. Will Ferrell may actually become funny… Nah. Onto the picks.
WEEK 2 PICKS
Game of the Week
- Mountain Grove, 1-0 (#4 class 3) at Thayer, 1-0 (#2 class 1)
- Thayer again steps up in class, but this time against a quality Panther squad. Both teams come off impressive opening wins. Thayer can serve serious notice to the rest of the state if they win this one. Any kind of close loss should still keep them well up in the polls. The Panthers could also benefit here if they lay a solid loss on Thayer. The question is which defense will be able to slow down the other team more.
- Prediction: The Bobcats bite off a little more than they can chew here. Casey White does enough to get Mountain Grove the win.
Other Top Games
- Branson, 1-0 at Rogersville, 1-0
- Both come off good wins against Big 8 teams. Who will prove they’re for real? Branson needs more strong play from QB Tee Helsel.
- Prediction: I think these Wildcats have a little more success. Rogersville for the win.
- Waynesville, 0-1 at Kickapoo, 1-0
- A tale of two teams. The defending champs lost a tough one to Helias. While the Chiefs are not the 1-9 team of last year. The Tiger defense is solid, but they have to figure out how to score.
- Prediction: My preseason pick was Waynesville, and I’ll stick with that. But if the Chiefs look as good as last week, don’t be surprised if they take it.
- Monett, 1-0 (#1 class 3) at Marshfield, 1-0
- Monett served notice last week that they are legitimate. Marshfield showed that their veteran team is to be feared. Can they contain the Cubs on offense and put up enough to win?
- Prediction: The Cubs D continues to flex it’s muscle and takes the win.
- East Newton, 1-0 at Catholic, 1-0
- The Patriots looked very fast against Mt. Vernon to open the year. Can they maintain that against a bigger Catholic squad that handled Willow Springs 35-6?
- Prediction: I took the Irish to win before the season. And I agree with myself.
- Lebanon, 1-0 at Neosho, 1-0
- Ryan Howerton was huge last week for the Yellowjackets. Can he replicate his numbers from last week? Neosho took down a quality Seneca team last week and will be looking to make an early statement.
- Prediction: I had Neosho in my preseason picks. But that was before the spread was unveiled in Lebanon. Gotta switch to the Jackets here.
- Pierce City at Greenfield
- Early battle of Spring River Valley contenders. Pierce City is established, Greenfield is looking to move up.
- Prediction: I like Pierce City to win a good battle.
Games to Keep an Eye On
- Republic, 0-1 at Bolivar, 1-0
- The Tigers look to avoid an 0-2 start after dropping a close one to Nixa. Bolivar just wants to keep on rolling.
- Prediction: The Liberators go 2-0.
- Carthage, 1-0 (#2 class 4) at Nixa, 1-0
- Nixa had a great start to the season but faces a totally different type of team tonight. With the emergence of Brian Poston, Carthage becomes even more dangerous.
- Prediction: Carthage should pile up more points for the win.
- Rogers, AR, 0-0 at Webb City, 1-0 (#3 class 4)
- A real challenge for the Cards with Arkansas 7A power Rogers coming to town. Will they have a letdown after big win over Harrisonville.
- Prediction: Should be a tough game, but I give the edge to Webb in their home opener.
- Mt. Vernon, 0-1 at Cassville, 0-1
- Big 8 powers coming off opening night losses. Both have issues but is Cassville’s just inexperience? Is Cory Phillips as good as has been said?
- Prediction: The Wildcats show more improvement and take the win.
- Cabool, 0-1 at Liberty, 1-0
- Cabool looks to rebound after shocking first week loss. But must go through a LIberty team that was dominate against Portageville.
- Prediction: I’ll go with my preseason pick of Cabool. But this should tell us the real story on them.
- Skyline, 1-0 at Fair Grove, 1-0 (#10 class 2)
- Skyline has to be feeling good after routing an overmatched Sacred Heart team. But now they get newly ranked Fair Grove and Caleb Schaffitzel.
- Prediction: The Eagles win and it won’t be pretty.
- Miller, 1-0 (#4 class 1) at Sarcoxie, 0-1
- After taking down a good Liberal team that they might have been overlooking a bit, Miller get a decent Sarcoxie team that they better not overlook.
- Prediction: Miller will have learned their lesson and will roll.
- Heritage, AR, 0-0 at Parkview, 0-1
- Heritage with their first ever game against a Viking team that got chewed up by a Lebanon buzzsaw. So why is this on the games to keep an eye on?
- Prediction: Because the 55 game losing streak ends here. Parkview wins.
Rest of the schedule
- Hillcrest, 1-0 at Camdenton, 0-1
- Hillcrest had it’s offense in high gear while the Lakers swallowed a bitter loss.
- Prediction: Camdenton bounces back to win.
- St. Clair, 1-0 at Salem, 0-1
- Can Salem recover from being embarrassed by Mountain Grove against St. Clair?
- Prediction: I had Salem in the preseason, but it doesn’t feel right now. St. Clair.
- Archie, 1-0 at El Dorado Springs, 1-0
- Nice win for the Bulldogs over Stockton. They’ll try to use it as a springboard to a good year.
- Prediction: 2-0 for ElDo.
- Ava, 0-1 at Willow Springs, 0-1
- Both teams have to be disappointed with opening games.
- Prediction: Ava get up off the deck first to win this battle of the Bears.
- Diamond, 0-1 at Jasper, 0-1
- May be Diamond’s best chance for a win this year. Jasper looking to stay off the bottom of the Spring River Valley standings.
- Prediction: Jasper keeps the shine off Diamond.
- Central, 0-1 at Buffalo, 0-1
- Someone ends up 0-2 after hoping to be 2-0.
- Prediction: Buffalo’s DEs contain Central.
- Stockton, 0-1 at Ash Grove, 1-0
- The Pirates look to get an early Mid-Lakes victory. Stockton looks vulnerable after opening week loss.
- Prediction: The Tiger bounce back to win.
- Drexel, 0-1 at Osceola, 1-0
- The Indians looked excellent against Pleasant Hope while Drexel was shut out.
- Prediction: Osceola with the easy win.
- Willard, 0-1 at Ozark, 0-1
- Neither team had much luck stopping the offense last week. Although they were very different schemes.
- Prediction: Ozark should recover nicely and get the win.
- West Plains, 0-1 at Joplin, 1-0
- Joplin’s spread offense should only improve as they get more comfortable. Bad news for the Zizzers.
- Prediction: Joplin takes it easy.
- Affton, OK, 0-0 at McAuley, 0-1
- The Warriors took a tough loss in overtime to Marionville last week. How will they respond against a good Affton team.
- Prediction: McAuley takes another tough loss.
- Lamar, 0-1 at Seneca, 0-1
- I predicted Seneca to lose one regular season game, to Neosho. Now can they prove my right an run the next nine.
- Prediction: Lamar is improved and will be dangerous at district time, but the Indians win this one.
- Green Forest, AR, 0-0 at Reeds Spring, 0-1
- Wolves were beaten down by Tyler Evans and Co. last week. They should be able to recover tonight.
- Prediction: Reeds Spring wins a hard fought contest.
- McDonald County, 0-1 at Grove, OK, 0-0
- A tough start to the year for the Mustangs figures to get no better against a Grove team that finished 10-2 last year in Oklahoma 4A.
- Prediction
- Marionville, 1-0 at Pleasant Hope, 0-1
- Marionville survived in overtime to open the season. The Pirates should be an easier test.
- Prediction: The Comets continue Pleasant Hope’s woes.
- Aurora, 0-1 at Carl Junction, 1-0
- CJ got a tough win against Lamar. Aurora doesn’t look like they will challenge them as much.
- Prediction: The battle of the dogs goes to the Bulldogs at home.
- Liberal, 0-1 at Lockwood, 0-1
- Liberal hung with Miller but couldn’t finish the deal. Lockwood has some holes to fill.
- Prediction: Liberal gets into the thick of the conference race by taking down the Tigers.
- Houston, 1-0 at Southern Boone, 0-1
- Houston showed great defense in upsetting Cabool. Can they do it again?
- Prediction: I took SB in my preseason picks. But defense wins, so I’ll go with Houston.
- Strafford, 1-0 at Warsaw, 0-1
- The Indians looked great to open the season, but going to Warsaw is never an easy trip.
- Prediction: Strafford gets it done to go 2-0
- Glendale, 0-1 at Rolla, 1-0
- Both offenses looked good last week, but Rolla was able to grind out a win with their running game.
- Prediction: Glendale has a long ride home as Rolla goes to 2-0.
