Week 2 review
By Joboo | September 8, 2008
Ever seen one of those guys who is so good at a video game that you have to shut it off to get them to stop playing? Well it’s a good thing someone kicked the plug out on Joplin and West Plains or they might still be scoring. 111 points. Over 1,000 yards. A 200 yard rusher with 5 TDs on one side. A QB passing for 6 TDs and rushing for 2 more on the other. Wow! The Zizzers are now averaging over 40 points per game and are 0-2.
It could be worse though. The Parkview offense is averaging over 30 a game but the defense is giving up almost twice that amount. Luckily Joplin and Parkview do not meet this year or a 3 digit scoreboard might have been needed. The Viking losing streak now is at 56.
So far this season.
- Teams we underrated: Houston, Rolla, Branson, East Newton.
- Teams we overrated: Cabool, Republic, Stockton.
- Teams to look out for: Lamar, Liberal, Neosho.
- Teams on the downside: Marionville, Pierce City, Glendale
- Jekyll and Hyde teams: Strafford & Salem.
And now week 2 of….
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY
The Good
- Waynesville, 0-1 at Kickapoo, 1-0
- Prediction: My preseason pick was Waynesville, and I’ll stick with that. But if the Chiefs look as good as last week, don’t be surprised if they take it.
- Result: Waynesville 27, Kickapoo 0. Back to the status quo at least for this week.
- Monett, 1-0 (#1 class 3) at Marshfield, 1-0
- Prediction: The Cubs D continues to flex it’s muscle and takes the win.
- Result: Monett 14, Marshfield 12. This is the real Monett offense. Will it cost them down the road?
- Republic, 0-1 at Bolivar, 1-0
- Prediction: The Liberators go 2-0.
- Result: Bolivar 42, Republic 20. Bolivar one of the early teams to beat.
- Carthage, 1-0 (#2 class 4) at Nixa, 1-0
- Prediction: Carthage should pile up more points for the win.
- Result: Carthage 35, Nixa 0. And they can play defense too.
- Rogers, AR, 0-0 at Webb City, 1-0 (#3 class 4)
- Prediction: Should be a tough game, but I give the edge to Webb in their home opener.
- Result: Webb City 36, Rogers, AR 33. The Cards are showing the mental toughness needed to win a championship.
- Mt. Vernon, 0-1 at Cassville, 0-1
- Prediction: The Wildcats show more improvement and take the win.
- Result: Cassville 28, Mt. Vernon 7. The Wildcats line isn’t big. But they get stronger as the game goes along.
- Skyline, 1-0 at Fair Grove, 1-0 (#10 class 2)
- Prediction: The Eagles win and it won’t be pretty.
- Result: Fair Grove 34, Skyline 7. Eagles defend their state ranking well.
- Miller, 1-0 (#4 class 1) at Sarcoxie, 0-1
- Prediction: Miller will have learned their lesson and will roll.
- Result: Miller 43, Sarcoxie 13. Is Miller set for a big year after early close call?
- Hillcrest, 1-0 at Camdenton, 0-1
- Prediction: Camdenton bounces back to win.
- Result: Camdenton 42, Hillcrest 14. That’s the Laker team we were expecting.
- Ava, 0-1 at Willow Springs, 0-1
- Prediction: Ava get up off the deck first to win this battle of the Bears.
- Result: Ava 16, Willow Springs 12.
- Drexel, 0-1 at Osceola, 1-0
- Prediction: Osceola with the easy win.
- Result: Osceola 19, Drexel 7. Not quite so easy, but a win.
- Willard, 0-1 at Ozark, 0-1
- Prediction: Ozark should recover nicely and get the win.
- Result: Ozark 29, Willard 26. Great finish to open their new stadium.
- West Plains, 0-1 at Joplin, 1-0
- Prediction: Joplin takes it easy.
- Result: Joplin 63, West Plains 48. If Dane Kolkmeyer hadn’t been injured, the Eagles still might be scoring.
- Affton, OK, 0-0 at McAuley, 0-1
- Prediction: McAuley takes another tough loss.
- Result: Affton, OK 27, McAuley 14. Game effort for the Warriors but Affton is good.
- Lamar, 0-1 at Seneca, 0-1
- Prediction: Lamar is improved and will be dangerous at district time, but the Indians win this one.
- Result: Seneca 28, Lamar 26. The Tigers are good. Do not let the 0-2 start fool you.
- McDonald County, 0-1 at Grove, OK, 0-0
- Prediction: Grove will be too much for the Mustangs.
- Result: Grove, OK 56, McDonald County 7. Much too much.
- Marionville, 1-0 at Pleasant Hope, 0-1
- Prediction: The Comets continue Pleasant Hope’s woes.
- Result: Marionville 26, Pleasant Hope 8.
- Aurora, 0-1 at Carl Junction, 1-0
- Prediction: The battle of the dogs goes to the Bulldogs at home.
- Result: Carl Junction 47, Aurora 7. Aurora goes to Lamar, followed by Cassville, Seneca, at Monett, and East Newton. This could get ugly.
- Liberal, 0-1 at Lockwood, 0-1
- Prediction: Liberal gets into the thick of the conference race by taking down the Tigers.
- Result: Liberal 18, Lockwood 12. Big win for Liberal on the road.
- Glendale, 0-1 at Rolla, 1-0
- Prediction: Glendale has a long ride home as Rolla goes to 2-0.
- Result: Rolla 28, Glendale 7: Defense and ball control offense for the Bulldogs? That’s a winning formula.
- Houston, 1-0 at Southern Boone, 0-1
- Prediction: I took SB in my preseason picks. But defense wins, so I’ll go with Houston.
- Result: Houston 40, Southern Boone 0. Second straight shutout for the Tigers.
The Bad
- Branson, 1-0 at Rogersville, 1-0
- Prediction: I think these Wildcats have a little more success. Rogersville for the win.
- Result: Branson 26, Rogersville 23. The Pirates get it done for a second straight week.
- Mountain Grove, 1-0 (#4 class 3) at Thayer, 1-0 (#2 class 1)
- Prediction: The Bobcats bite off a little more than they can chew here. Casey White does enough to get Mountain Grove the win.
- Result: Thayer 21, Mountain Grove 13. Not a terrible loss for the Panthers. Big win for the Bobcats.
- Lebanon, 1-0 at Neosho, 1-0
- Prediction: I had Neosho in my preseason picks. But that was before the spread was unveiled in Lebanon. Gotta switch to the Jackets here.
- Result: Neosho 42, Lebanon 28. Lebanon allows 21 fourth quarter points to allow Neosho to escape.
- East Newton, 1-0 at Catholic, 1-0
- Prediction: I took the Irish to win before the season. And I agree with myself.
- Result: East Newton 38, Catholic 14: The Patriots are winning with speed. And lots of it.
- Pierce City at Greenfield
- Prediction: I like Pierce City to win a good battle.
- Result: Greenfield 20, Pierce City 13. A new wind is blowing in the Spring River Valley.
- Archie, 1-0 at El Dorado Springs, 1-0
- Prediction: 2-0 for ElDo.
- Result: Archie 17, El Dorado Springs 6. Good D again for the Bulldogs, but you won’t win many only scoring 6.
- Diamond, 0-1 at Jasper, 0-1
- Prediction: Jasper keeps the shine off Diamond.
- Result: Diamond 32, Jasper 20. Diamond breaks their double-digit losing streak on the road.
- Central, 0-1 at Buffalo, 0-1
- Prediction: Buffalo’s DEs contain Central.
- Result: Central 34, Buffalo 28. Another double-digit losing streak is over.
- Stockton, 0-1 at Ash Grove, 1-0
- Prediction: The Tigers bounce back to win.
- Result: Ash Grove 12, Stockton 7. Line problems hurting Stockton. Ash Grove is getting a chance for their youngsters to mature.
- Green Forest, AR, 0-0 at Reeds Spring, 0-1
- Prediction: Reeds Spring wins a hard fought contest.
- Green Forest, AR 20, Reeds Spring 7. Just not enough O for the Wolves.
The Ugly
- Cabool, 0-1 at Liberty, 1-0
- Prediction: I’ll go with my preseason pick of Cabool. But this should tell us the real story on them.
- Result: Liberty 53, Cabool 7. The story is we overrated Cabool big time, and Liberty is good.
- Heritage, AR, 0-0 at Parkview, 0-1
- Prediction: Because the 55 game losing streak ends here. Parkview wins.
- Result: Heritage, AR 52, Parkview 29. How can you not pull for Coach Wes Beachler and the Vikings?
- St. Clair, 1-0 at Salem, 0-1
- Prediction: I had Salem in the preseason, but it doesn’t feel right now. St. Clair.
- Result: Salem 42, St. Clair 14. Salem making early bid for chameleon of the year.
- Strafford, 1-0 at Warsaw, 0-1
- Prediction: Strafford gets it done to go 2-0
- Result: Warsaw 42, Strafford 6. Wow! A loss wouldn’t have been a big surprise. The Indians getting dominated is.
Record for the week: 21-14. (I changed 3 of my preseason picks and went 1-2 in those games. I’m obviously a moron. Or a genius depending on the way you look at it.)
Record for the year: 43-25
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Tommy Meyer, RB - West Plains
- Tough choice this week with lots of great performances, but I’ll go with Meyer’s ‘just won’t quit’ performance in a losing effort against Joplin. 207 yards on 20 carries and 5 touchdowns. Including 2 in the fourth quarter. Every time Joplin looked to have the game put away, Meyer carried the Zizzers back into it. His second TD in the fourth cut the lead to 56-48 with under seven minutes to play. Tough to bring down and gutsy play for the senior.
