Some real stunners this week.  After averaging almost 57 points per game through the first 3 weeks, Ozark is held to just 14 by 1-2 Carthage.  Likewise for Warsaw.  Eldon scored more points on them Friday (62) then they had given up in going 3-0 (56).  Cassville can only muster 7 points in falling to Seneca 26-7.  The Wildcats are off to their worst start since 2002.  Osceola gets a big win over state ranked Drexel and could move into the state rankings this week.  And Lebanon got Brock West like numbers from Elza Evans in dropping Glendale.  Read about it all in this ‘what just happened’ edition of…

  • Carl Junction (2-1) at Aurora (2-1)
    • Prediction: The Bulldogs keep burnin’ through the Big 8.
    • Result: Carl Junction 56, Aurora 26.  A total CJ stat fest.  Dustin Satterlee – 14 of 20 for 272 yards and 3 TDs.  Keynan Scheurich – 117 yards and 3 TDs rushing.  Matt Magee – 5 catches for  144 yards and 2 TDs.  The Bulldogs are rolling.
  • Diamond (1-2) at Miller (1-2)
    • Prediction: Diamond gets it going again with a win.
    • Result: Diamond 53, Miller 14.  The Cardinals hung around trailing 28-14 at the half, but 6 turnovers and 104 yards and 3 TDs from Zach Renfro did them in.
  • El Dorado Springs (1-2) at Clinton (0-3)
    • Prediction: A close one, but I’m taking Clinton.
    • Result: Clinton 21, El Dorado Springs 0.  The Bulldogs just couldn’t get on the board as the game was within reach until the final quarter.

    • Prediction: Jay gives up just 11 points per game.  McDonald County? 54.  Mustangs go 0-4.

  • Marshfield (0-3) at Rogersville (1-2)
    • Prediction: Big night for the Jays and they get their first win.

    • Prediction: Don’t care.  Mountain Grove wins.

  • Neosho (0-3) at Branson (1-2)
    • Prediction: I think a win is coming for Neosho, but not tonight.  Branson takes it.
    • Result: Branson 44, Neosho 35.  Close again for Neosho as they recovered from a 31-14 halftime deficit to pull within 38-35 with 1:49 left.  But after the onside kick attempt went out of bounds, the Pirates Jordan Bailey went 54 yards to put the final nail in Neosho’s coffin.  Bailey was the star for Branson rushing 13 times for 195 yards and 2 TDs, and adding an 89 yard kickoff return for a score.  Austin Hailey had 275 yards, 3 TDs, and 1 interception passing, and Justin McKee had 156 yards and 2 TDs receiving for Neosho.

  • Rolla (0-3) at Joplin (2-1)
    • Prediction: I don’t think this is Rolla’s week.  Joplin wins.

  • Springfield Catholic (1-2) at Fair Grove (2-1)
    • Prediction: When in doubt, go with the team with the best player.  I think that’s Cameron Skornia and Catholic.
    • Result: Springfield Catholic 42, Fair Grove 20.  Mr. Skornia doesn’t let me down scoring 4 TDs on the ground as the Irish cruise.
  • Springfield Central (0-3) at Excelsior Springs (1-2)
    • Prediction: 0-4 for Central.
    • Result: Excelsior Springs 61, Springfield Central 14.  Things do get easier for the Bulldogs.  Outside of Reeds Spring, their remaining opponents have 1 win combined.

The Bad

  • Kickapoo (3-0) at Camdenton (3-0) class 5 #5
    • Prediction:  The Lakers defense is underrated.  I think they find a way to contain the Chiefs and win.
    • Result: Kickapoo 21, Camdenton 19.  Missed extra points will often come back to haunt a team.  And so was the case for Camdenton as a missed XP in the second half left the score at 14-13, and forced the Lakers to go for 2 after a 4th quarter score pulled them within 21-19.  Laker QB Bo Dean could not quite make the endzone, and Kickapoo takes the OC lead.
  • McAuley Catholic (1-2) at Liberal (0-3)
    • Prediction: I don’t see Liberal being able to score enough to keep up.  McAuley goes 2-2.
    • Result: Liberal 41, McAuley 31.  Liberal held 1 13-12 lead at the half.  But behind the passing of Adam Robertson (284 yards, 5 TD passes) the Warriors stormed back in the second half to lead 31-27 in the fourth.  Austin Spivey would give the Bulldogs the lead back with a 9 yard TD run, and Dillon Coleman would get a pick 6 to seal the win.  Spivey finished with 153 yards and 3 TDs on the ground.

The Ugly

  • Warsaw (3-0) at Eldon (1-2)
    • Prediction: This is a different Wildcat team.  Warsaw goes 4-0.
    • Result: Eldon 62, Warsaw 19.  Eldon gets 2 TDs at the end of the second quarter to take a 41-13 halftime lead as the Wildcats had no answer for the Eldon ground game.  3 rushing TDs for Jeremy Eierman.
  • Osceola (2-1) at Drexel (3-0) class 1 #10
    • Prediction: I think the Indians fall to 2-2.
    • Result: Osceola 37, Drexel 14.  The Indians took advantage of 5 Archie turnovers to go up 30-8 midway through the 3rd and that was all she wrote.  Driston Self with another big night rushing 22 times for 193 yards and 3 TDs.
  • Lockwood (2-1) at Jasper (3-0)
    • Prediction: Lockwood pins a loss on the Eagles.
    • Result: Jasper 41, Lockwood 14.  114 yards rushing and 2 TDs from junior Jordan Rice, and scores from an interception return and a fumble for Colton Sweeney give Jasper the easy win.
  • Thayer (1-2) class 1 #9 at Salem (3-0)
    • Prediction: I think Salem is for real. They go to 4-0.
    • Result: Thayer 23, Salem 6.  The Bobcats jumped out to a 23-0 halftime lead with Shelby Barton getting a pair of TD runs.  And despite 368 yards of offense, including 170 on the ground from Zayne Kyser, 3 goal line stands from the Bobcats would preserve the victory.
  • Greenfield (1-2) at Archie (0-3)
    • Prediction: I think we get the same result.  Archie for the win.
    • Result: Greenfield 35, Archie 20.  Down 20-7 at the half, the Wildcats storm back in the second half.  220 yards rushing from junior Jake Tullock.  151 from Lane Hankins.  Could have been a much bigger win as the Wildcats had two trips inside the Archie 20 end in fumbles.
  • Ozark (3-0) class 5 #7 at Carthage (1-2)
    • Prediction: You have to think Ozark’s defense will cost them at some point, but not this week.  Ozark wins.
    • Result: Carthage 42, Ozark 14.  Just shocking.  After Ozark took the lead 14-13 with just under 7 minutes left in the first half, they would not score again.  Cameron Priester had 169 yards and 2 TDs on 32 carries for Carthage.

Record for the Week: 27-8 or .771 for the week.  That’s not bad, but 6 ugly picks is hurtful.  That makes me 119-27 and .815 overall for the year.

Out of Bounds

  • Notice my socks vs not notice my socks
    • Prediction: I think someone says something.  It will probably be Joboo Jr. saying that I’m embarrassing him, but someone will say something.
    • Result: Nope, not one person mentioned the mismatched socks.  I’m shocked.  2-1 for the year on out of bounds picks.

Player of the Week

  • Blayne Armstrong, QB, Marshfield -  27-38, 331 2 TD, 13 carries, 200 yards 2 TD
    • Armstrong and the Jays have been putting up huge numbers offensively all year.  And Blayne had his best game of the season so far to secure Marshfield’s first win.  Armstrong tossed on 20 yard TD pass to Willie Totten, had a first half 60 yard TD run, hit Matt Clancy with a 10 yard TD pass, and just for good measure added another run to paydirt, this time from 43 yards out.
